The high of my week was getting my Warby Parker home try-on glasses in the mail! It’s been so much fun wearing them around throughout the week as I try to figure out which pair I like the best. (The glasses just have plain glass in them, so I wear my contacts in order to wear the glasses around.) I was able to eliminate two options immediately, and I’m now trying to decide between the other three. Here are the options:
I thought I was going to go with the pair in the first picture because both my mom and a friend liked them the best when I asked for their opinions. They fit my face well and aren’t too big. But then when I sent the pictures to another friend, she told me that that pair doesn’t do much for my face and liked the other two better. So then I asked Instagram and the clear winner was the pair in the second picture. I like those a lot, but I worry they’re too big for my face. Tell me, friends, which pair do you like the best?
The low of my week was struggling during my spin workouts. Things just felt harder than normal and I’m not sure why. A part of me wonders if I’m in a phase of my cycle where my energy levels and output are a bit lower than normal. Something to pay attention to! I’ve just been telling myself that moving my body is the goal, even if it means setting my bike to a lower resistance level and cruising at a lower speed.
A blog post I enjoyed was When Possible, Choose Beautiful Things by Elisabeth Frost. I loved this blog post because it gave me a different perspective about my desire to have beautiful things in my home. For example, I love buying books and sometimes, it’s less about having my favorite books on my shelves to return to again and again and more about the aesthetic. I love having a home filled with bursting bookshelves. The aesthetic pleases me so much and brings me great joy, but sometimes I feel a little silly about my love of buying books. Or when I choose to buy an item for my kitchen and spend a little more money to get a style that is more aesthetically pleasing. The plain, understated style would work just fine but I want the pretty version because it would make me happier. I’ve always felt silly about this, but Elisabeth gave me a new perspective that had me thinking about this love of beautiful things in a new way.
When I invested in electric toothbrushes for our family I made a small splurge, spending an additional $9.99 to get the pink version for myself. It’s a subtle colour, but really does make me happy every time I use my toothbrush (and, as a bonus, it helps me avoid using my husband’s toothbrush by accident). Two years later, that $9.99 has bought me a disproportionate amount of daily happiness. Even the knowledge that I spent extra money helps elevate the experience, in essence saying: “You were worth it.”
A podcast episode I enjoyed was Soldiering On and Our Five Rules for Reading on Currently Reading. Ooh, this was a fun episode where Meredith and Kaytee laid out their personal rules for reading. They were very clear that their rules for reading may not be YOUR rules for reading; reading is very personal after all! It was fun to listen to what they put on their list and to think about what my own rules for reading are. Future blog post idea? You know it!
For my workouts, I completed two spin classes and two long walks. I took classes with my favorite instructors, Cody Rigsby and Leanne Hainsby. And I’m enjoying taking my walks a little after sunrise—between 7:30-8:00—before it gets too hot. Soon, even taking a walk at that time will be miserable! Florida summers FTW.
The best money I spent was $0 on more government-funded COVID tests! Did you know that you can order 8 more COVID tests? I wasn’t aware until someone mentioned it on Instagram and you better believe, I ordered them as quickly as possible. I’m going to have a nice big stack at my disposal!
My plans this weekend include a hair appointment this afternoon (will I be brave enough to chop off a significant length?!), a writing date with Mikaela on Saturday morning and game night with the fam on Saturday night, and a 5K walk in a local park on Sunday morning. A busy, fun weekend it shall be!
What was the highlight of your week?
Suzanne
I know I voted for Pair #1 on Instagram (and I still think they are gorgeous!) but today I am feeling Pair #3. LOL. I am super helpful.
Good luck with your hair appointment! I am excited to see if you do a big chop! I think you would look fabulous with a LOB. And then I can live vicariously through you, because I want one so bad but am a huge chicken when it comes to cutting my hair.
Stephany
I’m leaning towards #1 myself. Everyone loves #2 but I worry that they’ll get annoying since they’re so much bigger than what I currently wear. I’m still not sure what I want to do! Ack!
NGS
I think the frames in the first pic are what I would go with, although the second ones are pretty great, too. I think the third ones are a little wide for your face.
I downloaded that episode of Currently Reading and I’m going to give it a try. We’ll see how it goes!
My husband’s birthday is this weekend, so I think a highlight will be just spending time with him and hoping he likes his present!
Stephany
Those are the pair I am leaning towards, even if everyone loves #2 the best. They just feel like they fit my face the best and I worry the bigger pair could get annoying.
I am curious if you liked that episode of Currently Reading! Our podcast listening tastes are so wildly different and they can be very, very earnest at times, lol.

I’m a fan of pair #1. I really like the shape for your face. The squareness provides a counterbalance. Any of them will be great for you. Go with your gut.
Stephany
I think that’s what I’m going to end up going with! I like the square style!
Elisabeth
Okay, I didn’t read ANY of your commentary before looking at the pictures (i.e. what your Mom/friends/Instagram suggested) and I 100% vote for Pair #2. Sounds like that’s the winner on Instagram, too!
The first pair look a bit dated/ordinary (?) to me; the third pair look a bit oversized. And the middle ones, to me, look JUST RIGHT! I love the detail of the frame pattern and think they look adorable but not in a cutesy way – more of a very polished, chic way. Dare I admit they remind me of MY current glasses which I really like…
That said, I loathe picking out frames and find it such a tricky process so I might not be the best judge of these things. But it’s easier for me to instinctively pick out the pair I like on someone else. Isn’t it also frustrating how many different responses one gets! But I guess that every frame has ardent fans…you can’t go wrong.
I’m also excited to see your haircut. It is such a nice feeling to have a fresh haircut.
Thanks for the shout-out on my post <3
Hmmm. Highlight of the week? Finally hanging curtains over our patio door. We are so unhandy it's sad and I was absolutely exhausted by the time we were finished, but we did it and it is SO nice to be able to draw the curtains at night now (my father called our living room a "fishbowl" because for almost a year we had NO blinds on the windows and no curtain over the patio door). Having it done is one layer of success, but knowing we did it despite that sort of DIY job not being in our wheelhouse makes it extra satisfying.
Stephany
Yes, the frames on #1 do feel a bit ordinary. All of the frames come in other colors, so I may end up choosing those and going with a more fun pattern that makes them a little less blah. I love the pattern on the second pair, but they don’t offer that pattern for Pair #1! Wah.
I don’t know how anyone hangs curtains! I wanted to hang some over my large living room window because I used to face my computer away from the window so I was backlit in video calls. I thought hanging some light-blocking curtains could help! But trying to hang a curtain rod was so hard! I finally gave up, lol, and just faced my computer the opposite way. Kudos on getting it done!

I say the first pair complement the shape of your face well. The others are too big. Ultimately go with what you feel looks best!
Stephany
That’s what I think, too! I’m leaning towards #1. Thanks for your input!
San
I voted for #2 glasses – they look great on you!
I also ordered the free Covid tests – I don’t have the need to test very often (right now), but that might change during the summer, when I go back to the office, have field work and vacation coming up. Always good to get these for free, so why not take advantage?
I really enjoyed Elisabeth’s blog post, too. I do know that sometimes small ordinary things bring joy to my day, so I try to pay attention to this when I opt to buy sometimes ‘frivalous” things.
Stephany
It’s so nice to be able to test when I want! Just this morning, I took a test because I’ve been waking up with a scratchy throat (it goes away after a few hours, but is still worrying). I just wanted to make sure I don’t get Covid before my trip! Thankfully, it was negative and I’m just glad I was able to burn a test since I have all these extra ones laying around!
Nicole MacPherson
Leanne is my favourite too! I wanted to note that throughout the month my spin workouts really vary in “output” levels. So, it’s probably really normal to have some days that are FIRE and some days that are “we are just getting the workout DONE, and that’s IT.” Know what I mean?
I voted #2 on IG and I still vote #2, I think all three look great, you can’t go wrong, but #2 is my favourite.
We got free Covid tests from the boys’ school and we still have a lot left, so I’ll be hoarding them a little.
I liked that post by Elisabeth too, I always like to choose the pretty option AND to USE the good things in the house. In the past I often would “save” something for a special occasion but I don’t really do that anymore.
Stephany
I’m glad that you also struggle from day to day with your output! Sometimes it’s hard to remember that we’re not robots and our energy levels change from day to day depending on so many factors! And I was on FIRE in my last workout, so I’ve got my mojo back at least. 🙂
Jenny
Yes! The middle pair! Without reading any of your explanations, I immediately rejected pair #1 and was deciding between 2 and 3, and 2 is definitely the best. They are not too big for your face- they look great.
Can’t wait to see the new haircut! This is great- I’m so boring, I never do anything new, so I’ll let you do it and follow along vicariously.
Stephany
I just love the pattern on #2. I kinda wish I could get the pattern on #2 and the style of #1. I think #1 just looks a little blah because they’re just grayscale.
Lisa of Lisa's Yarns
Gosh! Tough choice on glasses! I think I would vote for 2 or 3, though, leaning slightly toward 3. But you can’t go wrong with any of the 3. That said I am terrible at picking out glasses! I love that you can try these on and see how you feel v making a quick decision at the eye glass store!
I also loved the reading rules episode. I think I will do a post about mine at some point, too.
Last week was pretty rough. I was fighting covid, Paul had an awful stomach bug. So I guess the highlight was when he stopped puking/having diarrhea? TMI? He is such a thin kid so it was stressful to see him not eat/retain food for 4 days. He seems to be making up for it at some meals, though. He had 5 bowls of cereal on Sat morning!
Stephany
I hate the process of picking out glasses at an eyeglass store. I feel like all of the workers are staring at me and once, I had an overeager worker who wouldn’t leave my side and ended up picking out my glasses for me and I didn’t like them at all, but I’m an enneagram 9 and that’s just what we do! UGH. (The most enneagram 9 story ever???) So now I like using Warby Parker since I can try on the glasses at home and wear them throughout my day to see how they feel during different activities.
Kim
I don’t think the second pair is too big for your face at all!
I love what you shared about choose beautiful things. If it makes you happy and you can afford it, then you should do it!!!!
Thanks for the link about more COVID tests – I hadn’t seen that!
What a fun weekend you had planned!!! Hmm, the highlight of last week was releasing Ned from his overnight prison LOL.
Stephany
Yes! Let’s choose beautiful things and use the beautiful things. If it’s going to give me an extra boost of joy to pick up a cat-themed dish towel that may be more expensive than a solid color dish towel, why not do it?

I *love* that Warby Parker does the home try on program (and pair #2 has my vote, if you’re still tallying!). Thank you for linking the Covid tests – I somehow missed that announcement!
Stephany
The home try-on program from Warby Parker is just so genius! It’s the best way to decide on a pair of glasses!
Anne
I can’t do the Warby Parker thing because to get my insurance to pay for the glasses it has to be through an “approved provider” and WP isn’t one. Also? My glasses are $$$$$$$ (thanks, astigmatism + bifocals) and I have to get new lenses, at least, every year. If not more frequently. Sigh.
Enough on that – I loved Elisabeth’s blog post, too, although I am not someone who seeks pops of joy in the same way. I am always going to order the most boring, uncolored version of something. I would probably flinch every time I used a pink toothbrush, to be honest!
Good for you for still moving despite your lower energy. That’s been a challenge for me, too – recognizing that any movement is good movement. And sometimes sleep > movement.
Happy almost-weekend. I can’t remember when you leave on vacation but given the date I’m commenting (6/3) I suspect it’s soon?
Stephany
Warby Parker doesn’t take my insurance either, but I found that it’s cheaper just to use my HSA to buy new glasses through them. When I go through a traditional eyeglass store, it was always so, so expensive (like $500+ since I have astigmatism and my eyesight is so bad, they have to give me special lenses so it doesn’t look like I’m wearing coke bottles, lol). With Warby Parker, it was just $150! And that’s with adding blue light filtering, which my other glasses didn’t have. I know it was slightly more for my mom, who also has bifocals (maybe closer to $300).
Sleep > movement indeed. Sometimes that is totally 100% necessary!
