Monthly Goals // February

february

Goal-setting is something that is always on my mind. I love to think about ways I can better myself and improve my life. That’s not to say I’m unhappy with who I am or where I am right now in my life. In fact, I am extremely happy with my life. I like who I am, I like where I’m headed, and it has taken a lot of work for me to get here. My life at 27 doesn’t look anything like I thought it would, but that’s okay. It’s my life. It’s my journey. And I’m really, really enjoying the process of discovering who I am, what I want, and what makes me abundantly happy.

But goal-setting. Back to the heart of this post. I love setting goals. I love big goals and small goals, scary goals and silly goals. But I want my goal-setting to be intentional. For the longest time, I’ve been setting very arbitrary goals. I haven’t really thought about why I’m setting the goals… they’re just based on a feeling. Or this idea that this is a goal I should be setting.

I’m so tired of the “should have’s.” I want to revoke that phrase from my vocabulary. There is no “should have,” there is only “I want to’s.”

Kathleen is someone I greatly admire and I have loved seeing her goal-setting process this year. One thing I really like is how she set aside five areas of her personal life to make improvements. These aren’t big areas like spirituality or finances, but smaller, “nonessential” (as she calls them) areas that tend to take a backseat to the bigger goals. I really like this idea. I like it so much that I decided to copy it and use it for myself.

So I had to come up with five areas of my life where I also wanted to see improvements throughout the year. I decided to make my areas a little more all-encompassing, though, because some of the personal areas I want to work on are big. Here’s what I decided on:

> finances (saving money, paying off debts, and spending my money more intentionally)

> health (losing weight, eating better, and working out on a consistent basis)

> nagging tasks (this one is stolen from Kathleen’s list – one task per month that I continually put off but will make me feel soooo much better once I finally get it done!)

> exploration (tackling items off my Tampa Bay to-do list, travel, putting myself out there)

> personal habits (adding one new habit to my life a month to improve my happiness, enhance my health, and/or get me on the path I want to be on)

Now, each month I will identify one goal that I want to tackle to address each area of personal growth. So, without further ado, here are my goals for February:

> finances: start using a cash budget system for groceries and extra expenses

> nagging task: clean out and declutter the screened-in patio

> health: start using a food journal to track what I’m eating and how I’m feeling

> exploration: visit the zoo

> personal habit: turning off the computer and TV by 8:00 p.m.

January Goals

january

Around September of last year, I took a break from setting monthly goals because I was feeling a bit burned out. I can admit to myself that I was in a funk for a few months toward the end of 2014, and I felt a bit like a duck – I looked cool, calm, and collected on the outside but inside, I was trying furiously to keep my head above water. I was just a bit mentally exhausted, so I did what I do best: I took a step back from the things causing me stress, settled inward, and focused on working through the funk. Which I did, and I’m in a better place (muuuuuch better) today than I was then.

And I’m so, so ready to bring back my monthly goals. I’m ready to take on some challenges, get back to my routine, and enjoy all January has to offer. Here are the goals I’m striving for this month:

1. Budget carefully, and only buy necessities. I’ve gone a wee bit off the deep end with my spending lately. There was Christmas, there were #treatyoself shopping adventures, and there was a St. Augustine getaway. I don’t regret a single penny spent, but it’s time to rein in the spending and get back to a strict budget. My goal for January (and probably longer, if I can manage it) is to not spend money on myself, only on necessities. I need to build my savings back up, as well as pay off my credit card that was swiped a little too frequently in December. (This does not include eating out. I’ve just accepted I like to eat out more than other people. Though I do hope to calm down how often I eat out. December was crazy, is what I’m saying.)

2. Get back to healthy eating. Well, the good news is that my appetite has come back. Though I will admit it wasn’t that bad to lose 10 lbs in 3 weeks without trying too hard. Now that my appetite is back, it’s time to get back to healthy eating. Meal planning, home-cooked meals, and choosing better foods when I eat out. I’m not setting any particular measurable goal for this… just to eat healthier as often as I can.

3. Start training for a 5k. Here’s some exciting news: I signed up to run a 5k at the end of March. Even better than that? It’s in Savannah! Yep – I’m going back. (And yep, I’m traveling six hours just to run a 5k because I love that city so gosh durned much!) But I am in no way ready to run a 5k. I can walk it, but I really want to push myself, train hard, and have a great race in my favorite city. I’m so excited!

4. Finish my Holiday Council work. Yes, yes, yes. I still have not finished the Holiday Council work. And I’ve only listened to the first call and one of the interviews. I love the Holiday Council so much, so it’s really bugging me that I put it aside in December. I want to spend some time in January going through the worksheets, the calls, and the interviews so I’m ready to attack 2015!

5. Declutter and organize. My bedroom, my bathroom, the kitchen, the closets, the patio… all of it needs to go through a massive decluttering spree. Deep breaths. I can do this!

Goals for 2015

2015 goals

I wasn’t sure I wanted to make yearly goals for this year. On the one hand, I love setting yearly goals because it’s fun the plan out what I want to accomplish over the next twelve months. I love to envision myself standing at the end of the year, and figuring out who that girl is and what her life looks like. On the other hand? I failed miserably at my yearly goals last year. I think I only completed one goal from my original list. By the second half of 2014, I was tired of the list and just basically gave up on it. (And ended up also giving up on setting monthly goals by September.)

But! New year, new me, right? Hopefully, at least. I feel different about this year. I feel less crazed about starting a brand-new diet, brand-new exercise routine, brand-new writing schedule, brand-new budget. January 1 rolled around, and nothing much changed for me. It was just… January 1. It’s a new year and I love the freshness of a blank slate… but I also know that just because it’s a new year… that doesn’t mean everything in my life will change automatically.

I’ve been thinking a lot about goal-setting lately. How much I love the beginning. That’s when it’s fun! I want to do this, and this, and this! Let’s set all the goals! Woooo!

But then… when it gets hard… when things get uncomfortable… when achieving the goal gets boring… it’s just so damn easy to give it all up. Go back to my old ways. Tell myself I’m just “not that girl.”

I don’t want to do that this year. I want to be that girl. I want to recognize when things are getting difficult, settle myself, and keep on going. Keep moving forward. Don’t let hiccups or mistakes or that nasty little inner critic of mine win.

All that said, here are the goals I set for myself for 2015. Let’s do this thing.

1. Complete the Book Riot Read Harder Reading Challenge. (And read 52 books.)

I am nerding out over this reading challenge. It is so up my alley! I’ve created an Excel spreadsheet for the different categories and the book I plan to read for them. I’ve started labeling books on my Goodreads account. And I’m so excited to get started. I’m cheating a little by allowing some books I read to count for multiple categories, but I also want to have the time to read my monthly book club pick, the books I review for TLC (already have four scheduled for the first four months of this year!), and the books I want to read for myself. Also, I’ve lowered the number of books I want to read this year to 52 (much lower than previous years!) I figure the books I read for the challenge are going to take me longer to finish than my usual easy reads, so it all works out in the end.

2. Get a tattoo.

This is on my “30 Before 30” list, and I want to finally mark this as complete. I’ve been wanting a tattoo for years, and I’ve been letting fear hold me back. I know the exact tattoo I want (this one) and where I want it (back of my neck). Now to just get ‘er done!

3. Move into my own apartment.

I’m planning on moving in August or September (because moving in suffocating humidity sounds like fun!) I need to start apartment hunting again, and putting away money for moving costs and things for my new place. I’m so excited about this goal!

4. Put 20% of my income towards savings/debt each month.

This is not much, and I’m hoping I can always do more than 20%, based on my current financial needs, but it’s an easily attainable goal. I’m hoping to put 10% in savings and put the other 10% towards one of my school loans, in the hopes of paying it off completely by the end of the year. (It’s one of my smallest loans, the other ones will take years. Yay.)

5. Travel to a new state.

I’m not sure what state, but there are way too many states I have not visited. In fact, I’ve only visited six states in my life. Isn’t that unbelievable?! I’ve been so busy with my cruises the past few years that traveling in the US has fallen by the wayside. This year, I’m thinking about forgoing my usual cruise vacation for traveling in the US. Time to knock some states off my to-see list!

6. Race a 5K.

This means, actually training for a 5K and setting a new personal record. I go back and forth with running, and maybe at the end of training for a 5K, I’ll find that running isn’t for me, but I want to at least say I’ve tried.

7. Master the 80/20 rule for healthy eating.

Every year, I set a specific goal for losing weight. And then I don’t lose weight. And then I get frustrated with myself. This year, instead of focusing so much on losing weight, I want to focus on healthy eating. I’ve mastered the exercise equation of things, and now it’s time to master the eating side. I like the 80/20 rule – 80% of the time eating clean, 20% of the time eating… less healthy foods. (I like this post, which breaks down what the 80/20 rule should really look like.) Hopefully, by living by this rule, I’ll see the weight loss I’ve been craving.

That’s it! Just seven goals to guide me through this year. Simple and attainable, but challenging enough for me to see growth in my life if I work hard enough.

August Check-In & September Goals

september

Complete honesty? I had no fricken idea what goals I set for myself in August. I knew I had challenged myself to work out 31 times, but my other four goals? No clue! So it’s not very surprising that I didn’t do too well this month. I’m going to try to be better at tracking my progress throughout the month and doing weekly check-ins with myself to hopefully stay on task! But, alas, let’s recap August goals and set new intentions for September, shall we?

Recapping August goals…

Purge my closet and come up with my capsule wardrobe. PASS. I went through a huge closet purge in early August, getting rid of almost half my clothes! It was so needed and I feel so much better with what’s left. Only the clothes I really love made the cut. I made a list of my ideal capsule wardrobe, and I’ll be slowly adding new items to my wardrobe that more closely fit my style.

Work out 31 times. FAIL. I worked out 25 times in August. That’s still pretty darn good, though!

Complete the 28-Day Food Change Challenge. FAIL. Oh, I wanted this program to be a success for me, but for some reason, I just couldn’t make it work in the way I needed it to. I’ve got all the paperwork, though, so maybe sometime in the future, I can try it again.

Leave my credit card at home. FAIL. Super fail. This was not a success at all.

Stay away from fast food. FAIL. I just couldn’t quit Chick-Fil-A this month, I ate it maybe four different times. Darn!

In September, I want to…

Start using MyFitnessPal again. I complain about the monotony of tracking what I eat, but it’s one of the best ways to keep me focused on healthy eating. If I want to lose weight, I need to track!

Save 20% of my income. September is going to be a rather spendy month since I have three birthdays to celebrate. But I’m going to try to be strict with saving 10% of each of my paychecks, so I can watch that savings account of mine grow.

Go to bed by 9:30. I’ve been very lax on my bedtime lately, and I’m only getting around 6 hours of sleep a night. That is not enough for me! I need to really make a 9:30 bedtime a priority because proper sleep is an important part of healthy living.

Write 10,000 words in my novel. That amounts to about 2,000 words per weekend. Doable! I really need to be more motivated with my fiction writing.

Visit two new-to-me restaurants. I’m in a food rut – especially when it comes to eating out – so I’d like to visit two new-to-me restaurants this month and stretch my food comfort zones a bit. This goal also goes hand-in-hand with my Tampa Bay Project, as one of my goals on that list is to visit 10 non-chain restaurants in the area. A win-win!

What is your biggest intention for September? Mine is eating healthy 80% of the time!

July Check-In & August Goals

augustgoals

Happy Friday! My mom and her fiance have spent the last week on a road trip to Georgia and Tennessee, and they come home tomorrow which I am so, so darn excited about! Other weekend plans: a writing date, a closet purge, and attending my first spin class in years (I have a friend who is getting certified to be a spin instructor and she’s hosting a free class. I don’t turn down free!).

Anyway, today I wanted to recap my July goals and set new intentions for August. The months are flying by, guys! But it’s good because we have one month to get through before foooootball. I can’t wait!

Recapping July goals…

Complete 31 workouts in 31 days. PASS. I successfully worked out 31 times in July, a goal I am very proud of achieving. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, though it did take a lot of willpower and motivation to keep up with the workouts so I didn’t fall too far behind. Typically, I took two rest days per week and then would “catch up” by working out twice a day two other days a week. (This usually consisted of doing cardio at the gym in the morning and a strength-training workout in the evening.)

Participate in Camp NaNoWriMo and write 31,000 words of my novel. FAIL. I didn’t even make it past day one. It’s just super hard for me to write 1,000 words a day with my full-time job. And I was also prioritizing exercise this month so when I had to choose between a workout or writing, I chose to work out. Figuring out how to work on my fiction novel while keeping up with my full-time writing job has been difficult.

Take an adventure somewhere. FAIL. Not one adventure, not even a little one? Not cool. I must do some adventuring in August!

Start the process of re-categorizing and tagging my posts. PASS. This was a lot of work! And slightly painful to read my blog posts from 2009/2010 (oh, how grateful I am to be finished with college!).

Add $500 to my emergency fund. FAIL. In July, I only managed to add $280 to my emergency savings, but considering I haven’t added anything to it in a few months, I’m really happy about that.

In August, I want to…

Purge my closet and come up with my capsule wardrobe. I purge my closets frequently and my closet has gotten to a point where it just fills me with stress and anxiety when I try to find something to wear. I want to wear clothes that I feel good in, so I need to just remove the clothes I don’t love. Added to that, I want to create a capsule wardrobe. More to come on this!

Work out 31 times. Yep, it’s on the list again for August! I enjoyed completing this goal a lot in July, so I’m striving for it again in August. Plus, I know if I put it as a monthly goal, I’m even more motivated to achieve it since I have to report back at the end of the month.

Complete the 28-Day Food Change Challenge. I joined Nicole’s 28-Day Food Change Challenge last month, but haven’t begun the process yet. With the way the program is designed, I knew I would need to approach it a bit differently than others may have, giving myself time to plan things out and get in the right mindset. I hope this goes well! I’m nervous because I’m not that best at seeing food-related challenges through.

Leave my credit card at home. I have gotten into the habit of using my credit card throughout the month and, even though I pay off my balance in full monthly, this is a habit I want to nip in the bud. Easiest way? Just leave the darn thing at home! (Or should I freeze it in a block of ice, a la Shopaholic?!)

Stay away from fast food. I’m not a huge fast food junkie, but I do tend to eat Chick-Fil-A at least once a week. It’s just one of those easy meals, you know? And it’s so good. Man. This one is going to be hard, but I really want to get out of the habit of going for fast food when I don’t want to cook!
