Snapshot of My Day: Sunday, February 19, 2023

Time I woke up: 7:00 a.m.

First thing I did upon waking: I turned off my alarm and then read a few chapters of my romance novel before getting out of bed and making myself a bowl of cereal.

Today’s weather: Super nice! The high was 79F and it stayed in the low 70s and sunny for most of the day. I love this time of year!

Something I spent money on today: Coffee this morning at the coffeeshop I went to for Silent Book Club.

An out-of-the-ordinary thing that happened today: Silent Book Club! It was our February meeting and it was fun to see some new and old faces. And I zipped through nearly 100 pages of my book while I was there, which was exciting.

Last thing I read (not on the Internet): Code Name Helene by Ariel Lawhon. It’s excellent!

Last thing I read (on the Internet): One of the daily e-newsletters sent to me by The Anti-Racism Daily.

Last text I sent: “Hmm, I’m always down for Italian or Mexican! Can’t go wrong there.” This is in reference to finding a good option for dinner this week, lol.

Last text I received: “Awesome! I will think up some options.” In response to the above text.

Last website I visited: Elisabeth’s blog!

Last show I watched: Brooklyn 99.

Last thing I said: “Hey, honey bunny.” To Eloise, as she was twirling around my legs while I was prepping my pizza to put it in the oven.

Last thing I ate: Samoas! Girl Scout season is my favorite season!

What I was doing an hour ago: I was taking a nice, hot bubble bath. I listened to the latest episode of Maintenance Phase and played Happy Color on my phone. It was divine!

What I will be doing an hour from now: I will probably be watching something on TV and eating a bowl of ice cream. Yum, yum!

Current whereabouts of other members of my household: I believe Lila is now under the couch (she usually goes under the couch for an hour or two this time of night). Whenever she army crawls out from under the couch, I exclaim, “There you are! I missed you!” Eloise is currently sitting right next to me as I type up this post!

One thing I crossed off my to-do list today: I grocery shopped for this week, which really wasn’t a big deal since I have dinner plans three nights this week (!). But I needed a few items, so I’m glad I did that after Silent Book Club.

Three Things Thursday (v. 10)

Three confessions

  • I’m thinking about going back to brunette. Every time I see a picture of myself as a brunette, it makes me want to immediately book an appointment with my hairstylist. It was a good color for me! I started transitioning to blonde in September of 2019 and haven’t looked back, but those brunette locks are calling to me.
  • It’s been a bit triggering to read posts I wrote in 2011/2012 because I was sooo focused on my weight and I spent so much time being so damn mean to myself. I thought I was fat and ugly and unwanted, and I was none of those things. It’s hard for me to read some of the words I wrote about myself back then. And it’s hard because I did gain a lot of weight in the years since, but I wish I knew then that it didn’t mean I was a failure
  • I’m starting to worry that I’ve developed plantar fasciitis. When I wake up in the morning or after I’ve had a long nap, the heels of my feet hurt a lot and I have to hobble around for a bit before I feel okay. Dr. Google tells me it’s plantar fasciitis and to see a podiatrist but I DON’T WANNA.

Three things I’m looking forward to this year

  • A Christmas trip to the mountains – We did it! We booked a Tennessee cabin for the week after Christmas. It’s a gorgeous cabin that gets great reviews on VRBO, and we are so excited. It will be my mom, my stepdad, me, and the dogs. I can’t wait!
  • Getting a new bed – I am just so ready to get rid of my old mattress and bedframe and have something new! It is more than time for this change, but there are so many different things I need to do before that happens (selling my old bedframe, ordering my new bedframe, ordering my new sheets and quilt, figuring out the mattress and box spring I want , etc.) And then when everything is ready, I need to coordinate with my brother because he will be delivering my mattress/box spring and offered to put together my new bedframe when it arrives. Ahhh! Logistics is something that I struggle with, so I need to just write down everything I need to do and start marking off the tasks one by one.
  • TAYLOR SWIFT – I feel so lucky and grateful that Bri was able to handle the Ticketmaster site and get us tickets to see Taylor Swift in April. I can’t believe I get to see her!

Three destinations I want to visit before I die

  • Paris, France – I am hoping to make this trip a reality in 2024 if I can get my act together to save up for it. It’s a city I’ve always wanted to visit!
  • Hawaii – This is one of those trips that just seems so out of reach for me. Tickets to Hawaii are expensive and so are hotels and food and excursions while on the island. Why is traveling so cost-prohibitive? Argh.
  • Italy – I’d love to do a Mediterranean cruise around Italy. Wouldn’t that be amazing? One day!

Three recent Amazon purchases

  • Seamless bra in black ($22) – I have a seamless bra from this same brand that I love. It’s so comfortable that I wear it almost daily. I finally bought a second bra in another color, and I’ll probably end up buying a few more because why not?!
  • Spa headband, pack of three ($9) – I don’t wear a headband to keep back my hair when I’m doing my skincare routine, but it would be nice to have this as an option. These were pretty cheap and get great reviews!
  • Caress body wash, pack of six ($29) – Recently, I realized I could save a whole lot of money if I stopped buying my body wash (which I use in my bubble baths that I take nearly daily) at Target or Publix. Each bottle can be $6 or $7! This pack of six brings down that price to $4.83/bottle.

Three toys the cats love

  • Crumpled-up pieces of paper that they steal off my desk
  • Elastic hair ties that I leave on my dresser
  • Bottle caps that fall off my kitchen counter

Three books I’ll be reading soon

  • Rage Becomes Her: The Power of Women’s Anger by Soraya Chemaly – I’ve had this book on my Goodreads TBR list for quite a while (four years!) and I think it will be a powerful read for me, as someone with repressed emotions, ha.
  • The Gown by Jennifer Robson – A historical novel about embroiderers who work on Princess Elizabeth’s wedding dress in 1947? Yes, please!
  • My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing – This is a thriller about a couple that has been married for 15 years and decides to spice up their marriage with murder! AS YOU DO.

Three things that made me happy this week

  • Having Monday off – I always take the Monday after the Super Bowl off, and it was so nice to be able to watch the game and not fret about work in the morning! I got to sleep in, get some appointments done, and take a long nap in the afternoon, which was so nice.
  • Galentine’s with Bri – Bri and I have been doing a fun Galentine’s celebration for many, many years now. I think this was year 9? Crazy! Usually, we order pizza and snuggle on the couch while watching a rom-com. This year, we decided to be fancy and we got dinner at an adorable restaurant in town called The Library. It was fun!
  • Girl Scout cookies – My mom’s next-door neighbor has a kid who is a Girl Scout, so we happily ordered a nice little array of cookies from them! I got two boxes of Thin Mints and two boxes of Samoas, and I am one happy camper.

Three things I’m doing this weekend

  • Attending the February meeting for the Silent Book Club – I had so much fun at the January meeting, so I’m excited to make this group a regular thing!
  • Having a writing date with Mikaela – As always! I think I’ll work on podcast outlines during this writing date, as Bri and I will start recording episodes for season 4 next week.
  • A coffee date at The Blend – The Blend is one of my most favorite coffee spots near me, mostly because they do coffee flights that are so much fun! I haven’t had a coffee flight in a while, so I think I’ll get one this weekend. 🙂

Five for Friday (v. 89)

1) A new kind of friendship bracelet

Our January book club (which we couldn’t have until early February, due to busy schedules) came with a fun activity: permanent jewelry! I was first introduced to this concept from Love is Blind (I know) and then when a friend showed up to our November book club meeting with a permanent bracelet, we wanted to know everything about it! We decided to have our own permanent jewelry party during our January meeting, and it was really fun! I got a delicate rose gold bracelet and I really love it. This piece could be a great 3rd wedding anniversary gift. The experience isn’t a cheap one (I was hoping to get two bracelets, but it would have been $250+!), but the bracelets should last 3-5 years and if they come undone, we can get them rewelded for just $15 (and we get one free reweld with our purchase). We all picked out different jewelry and had a fun time getting the bracelets welded onto our wrists! I wasn’t sure if having a bracelet on my wrist 24/7 would annoy me, but I barely notice it’s there most of the time. The schmoopy part of my brain loves having this tangible reminder of the forever friendships I have forged with these badass women. <3

2) Where there’s a will, there’s anxiety

My mom has been finalizing her will this week, which is something I have been asking her to do for a while. My grandfather did not have his will completed (or maybe it was his trust that he hadn’t finalized? This whole procedure is very confusing), and it made the process of dealing with his estate very, very complicated for my mom. She doesn’t want my brother and me to go through that, and neither do I. So I am so very glad she’s getting this process done. But it’s also TERRIBLE for my anxiety! I don’t want to think about this process! I already spend so much time worrying about my mom dying, and having her talk to me about her wishes and who gets what and what happens if she dies before my stepdad… it’s a lot to handle. Obviously, I want her to be able to talk this over with me as I will be the executor of her will and I want this process to be as easy as possible for my brother and me… but it just makes me really sad to think about. All that said, I’m glad she’s getting this done and I hope we can just get it all finalized and not think about it for… oh… another 50 years? Yes.

3) My morning and evening routines

I’ve been doing very good about sticking to my morning and nighttime routines. I need to be better about starting my nighttime routine at a normal hour (8pm and not 9:30pm), but it’s been fun to tick off the boxes on my Todoist app when I complete the task. Here’s what my morning routine looks like:

I’ll usually feed the cats and take my morning vitamins (a vitamin D supplement, magnesium glycinate, birth control pill, multivitamin, and vitamin C gummies), and then get started on my skincare routine. My morning skincare routine is simple: cleanser, toner, niacinamide serum, vitamin C serum, and an SPF moisturizer. I’ll usually tackle the other tasks on my morning routine in between washing my face, since I like to let each product sit for a minute before moving on to the next product. A lot of this is stuff I don’t necessarily need to remember (like brushing my teeth – it’s not something I included on my morning routine checklist even though I definitely brush my teeth in the morning!), but is part of my evening routine so I want to have it there. I like having the task to take my Lexapro nightly since I used to be terrible about taking my meds regularly.

4) The “One-Line-a-Day” hack

I’ll admit that I was pretty bad about keeping up with my One-Line-a-Day journal last year. At one point, I think I was 6 weeks behind on filling it out? Eesh. Thank goodness for “Everyday Moments” and my blog to help jog my memory about what I was doing/thinking on a particular day. While we’re only 41 days into 2023, I am proud to report that I am keeping up with my journal on a regular basis and I think it’s because I’m so excited to see what I wrote at this point last year. For example, I have an entry of the day Bri and I decided to start a podcast and an entry of the day I started my new role as manager. What fun it was to relive those memories through this journal! I think this excitement will help me keep up with my journal much, much better than I did in 2022.

5) Weekend plans

I have a fun weekend planned! Tonight, my mom, my brother, and I are going to Jim Gaffigan’s show in Tampa! EEKS! This was a Christmas present from my mom and I have been looking forward to it for months. It’s going to be such a fun time with my two favorite people. Saturday will be a low-key day. I have a morning writing date planned with Mikaela and then will need to run some errands, like taking my car through the car wash as it has a nice thick layer of pollen on it. I guess spring has arrived in Florida! And Sunday is the Super Bowl! I’m looking forward to eating good food, hanging out with my fam, and watching a good game. I have no horse in the race, as I would be happy if either team won (my nephew, however, is a Chiefs fan so I’ll give the edge to them so my nephew will be happy). I’m also off work on Monday (as the day after the Super Bowl is a holiday in my book), so it will be a lovely three-day weekend for me!

Monthly Recap | January 2023

Hi, friends! Happy first day of February! With a new year comes a new monthly recap series, and I’m really excited about this one. This post is broken down into 5 sections: good stuff, hard stuff, stuff I recommend, bookish stuff, and goal stuff (wherein I’ll update you guys on how I’m pacing on some of my yearly goals). Sound fun? I hope so!

Good Stuff

  • Attending the Silent Book Club in Tampa – This is a new book club that is exactly up my alley! We met at a coffee shop in Tampa, chit-chatted with each other for a bit, and then spent a full hour in silence, reading our books. It was so nice! Afterward, we did a book exchange. I had a lot of fun and already have the February meeting on my calendar.
  • Finding a psychiatrist – My anxiety has been unmanageable for many, many months and I finally decided to do something about it. I’m now seeing a psychiatrist, someone who is warm and compassionate and committed to helping me feel better, and I have hope that I will finally get my anxiety under control.
  • A really excellent annual review – I had my annual review this month, and my director spent most of it bragging about me, which felt really satisfying. She also gave me a score of “significantly achieves expectations,” which was only handed out to a small number of employees in our organization. I know I had a really good year, career-wise, and this really validates that.
  • Winning my work’s fantasy football draft – This was such a fun surprise! I started off the season on the struggle bus, but my team got it together at the end to pull off a nice win!
  • Lots of time spent with family – One of my favorite things about January is all the time I get to spend with my family to watch all of the playoff games. For a few weeks, we spend nearly all of Saturday and Sunday together, which is really fun and makes my heart very full.

Hard Stuff

  • A doctor’s appointment from hell – I’ve already documented this doctor’s appointment. I was hoping to get a follow-up survey from the office after my appointment, but I never did, which means I’m going to need to call their office to lodge my complaint. It must be done, though.
  • So much anxiety – I was hoping that the new year would mean my anxiety episodes would magically disappear, but surprise! That has not happened. It’s been another tough month of having that low hum of anxiety rippling through my body on a daily basis, and it really fucking sucks.
  • The Dolphins losing their playoff game – Ugh. Will I ever see the Dolphins win a playoff game in my lifetime? I am proud of how they played, though, especially since we had to use our third-string rookie against a very good Bills team. Next year!

Stuff I Recommend

  • The Traitors (Peacock) – My mom recommended this show to me and told me I needed to watch it so we could discuss it. I am obsessed. It brings together reality TV stars (from Survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, Below Deck, etc) and regular people and they live together in a big castle in Scotland. Three of these players have been chosen to be traitors, but only the traitors know who each other is. Every night, the traitors meet to “murder” someone in the group, and the other people in the group (known as the “Faithfuls”) have to try to find out who the traitors are. It’s fascinating and fun, and I can’t get enough of it.
  • Comfy lounge pants – I bought these pants in December because I just couldn’t pass up the pattern and how cozy they felt. I wear them paired with a nice top on weekdays, so I look presentable for video calls while still being ridiculously comfortable at home.
  • Kindle pouch – For the longest time, I’ve kept my Kindle Paperwhite in a case and on a whim, I decided I wanted to go case-less and just use a pouch for the times when I need to throw it in my purse. I love this pouch! It’s slim and very protective and looks pretty, too.
  • A 2023 desk calendar – I bought this beautiful handmade desk calendar from Etsy. I like being able to see the whole month at a quick glance.
  • BBQ cheddar mini meatloaves from Iowa Girl Eats – I don’t know if I’ve ever shared this recipe with you guys, but it is my go-to meatloaf recipe. It is SO GOOD and makes excellent leftovers.

Bookish Stuff

  • # of books/pages read: 11 books (3,831 pages)
  • Favorite book of the month: Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister
  • Least favorite book of the month: Now Is Not the Time to Panic by Kevin Wilson
  • Books I abandoned: Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto (abandoned at pg 110; the plot was just so over-the-top and silly) and The Idea of You by Robinne Lee (abandoned at pg 175; the romance was stressing me out so much!)
  • Format breakdown: print books (4), e-books (4), and audiobooks (3)
  • Genre breakdown: Mystery/thriller (4), romance (4), contemporary fiction (2), nonfiction (1)
  • Most recent book acquired: Unwinding Anxiety: New Science Shows How to Break the Cycles of Worry and Fear to Heal Your Mind by Judson Brewer (During one of my anxiety spirals this month, I Googled, “best books on anxiety” and this book was on a lot of lists. Let’s hope it helps!)

Goal Stuff

  • Go for a walk every day (19/30) – Progress, not perfection, right? In February, my goal is to do just a little bit better!
  • Drink a bottle of water every day (13/31) – Oof. This one is not pretty, but it’s a starting point! I do better about drinking water on weekdays, less so on weekends.
  • Complete 100 Peloton workouts (9/100) – I am right on track with this goal. If I can keep doing 9 Peloton workouts every month, I’ll meet this goal no problem.
  • Watch 6 movies and 6 standup specials – This month, I watched Glass Onion. I was really excited to watch this movie because I loved Knives Out and I liked it okay. It didn’t fully meet my expectations and I thought the ending was rather unsatisfying, but there were some fun twists and turns I wasn’t expecting. 3.5/5, I would say.
  • Establish a better morning/nighttime routine – I’m still working on the nighttime routine, but I do feel like I’m doing a lot better with my morning routine. I have a list of tasks I need to accomplish every morning before I start working and most days, I accomplish them!

TGIF (v. 48)

The high of my week was having a fun afternoon with my mom on Sunday. We went out for lunch and then popped into Homegoods and Target for a little bit of shopping. It was a really nice time!

The low of my week was having anxiety episodes. I started my new regimen of 30mg of Lexapro over the weekend, but of course, it’s going to take some time for my body to adjust. My mind, meanwhile, wants things to be okay right now, and since I’m not, my anxiety has been thrown into hyperdrive. I’ve also started taking melatonin again at night because I’ve been having a lot of trouble sleeping and tossing and turning when I do fall asleep. This has helped a lot! I’m trying to be patient with myself and knowing I have a psychiatrist who is dedicated to helping me feel better has helped a lot while I struggle through anxious days and nights.

One nagging task I marked off my to-do list this week was hanging my wall clock! I received this beautiful wall clock for Christmas and it has been sitting in its packaging since then, eeks. It was one of those tasks that I thought was going to be really complicated and the clock was going to be really hard to hang, but it took me less than 10 minutes! And now I have a beautiful clock in my apartment. (Unfortunately, I just realized it’s about 4 minutes slow, which is going to aggravate me, so my new nagging task is to take the clock off the wall to fix the time.)

I’m currently reading only one book right now, which is The Fine Print by Lauren Asher. It’s a contemporary romance that Meredith of Currently Reading raved about, and since she is very picky about her romances, I knew I had to pick it up. I’m not very far into the novel, so I can’t give an opinion just yet. In other reading news, I was struggling through The Idea of You by Robinne Lee. This book has gotten phenomenal reviews from so many friends, but I was so stressed out about the romance! (It’s about a 39-year-old woman who starts dating a 20-year-old member of a boy band.) I was reading maybe 20 pages a day of the book but was never excited to pick it up, so I finally decided to abandon it yesterday. I feel very relieved, which is a good sign!

A podcast episode I enjoyed was Sasheer Was Scared to Leave Nicole Stranded in the Middle of the Ocean on Best Friends with Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata. In this episode, Nicole and Sasheer recap their trip to the Bahamas and I need them to write a script based on their vacation because this is the movie we need in the world. It started with an Airbnb house from hell and ended with Nicole’s jet ski running out of gas while they were in the middle of the ocean. And that’s only part of their insane adventure! They still have 3.5 days to recap for us! Please do yourself a favor and listen to this crazy story (and then listen to part 2 when it drops next week). It’s hilarious and awful and amazing!

The best money I spent this week was $6 on three salad plates. I like using smaller plates for snacks and the like, but for way too long, I have only had ONE salad plate. One! I don’t know if I only bought one to begin with, or if I bought two and misplaced the other one. But it was a real annoyance because if I used the plate earlier in the day, I would have to wash it to use it later on. I finally decided to just buy more plates. They are these cheap, white salad plates from Target, nothing fancy, and I was just so delighted by myself when I bought them.

My plans this weekend include nothing much! My Friday night and Saturday are free (I may wind up doing a karaoke room with some friends, but I’m still debating if I want to do that, ha). Sunday, I have a writing date with Mikaela in the morning and playoff football in the late afternoon. So sad that there are only 3 football games left this season! Wah.
