Holiday Week: Confessions

1. This year, my mom and I bought a fake tree. I have been on Team Real Tree for the past 23 years, and the thought of going artificial made my skin crawl. But then I got to thinking about the process of buying a tree, bringing it home, fitting it into the stand, watering it, and dealing with the needles. Going artificial was a no-brainer and it has been so much easier.

2. This season, I cannot listen to the song “Christmas Shoes.” The song is so sad and puts me in a depressed funk. Also, I can’t stand the song “Same Old Lang Syne,” since I don’t think the singer has a very good voice. This song is just too corny for me.

3. Apparently, now you have to “Santa-tize” your hands before seeing Santa. I don’t remember doing this when I was a kid and remained perfectly healthy. It’s funny how germaphobe our society has gotten. (And I’m not saying in this a bad way, just an observation!)

4. We always wrap presents for our dog and put them under the tree. Doesn’t every pet owner do this? No?

5. I have no memories of any bad Christmases. My mom always did everything she could to make sure my brother and I had a great Christmas, even if she had to sacrifice a lot.

6. This is the first Christmas in a very long time that I will spend at home. My mom and I are hosting Christmas dinner and my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew are coming over. I am really, really excited about this.

7. This week fills me with all sorts of anxiety and fear that something horrible will befall my family and make the holidays a time of sadness for me.

8. Growing up, I always figured Santa came to our apartment and knocked on the door, even though in every movie, he came through the chimney. Unfortunately, we don’t have one of those so that was my best guess as to how Santa brought us presents.

9. Also, on the Santa front, I was always confused about why he wrapped our presents for us but in every movie, he didn’t wrap any presents.

10. Carol of the Bells used to scare the crap out of me. Now, it’s my favorite Christmas song.

What are some of your holiday confessions?

Love it! We also have an artificial, pre-lit, tree. The convenience is amazing although I think I would love the smell of a real tree. Let's see, a holiday confession?

I'm 23 and still thoroughly enjoy getting a stocking full of goodies on Christmas morning. (Thank you mom and dad).

I wish kids could hold on to the innocence of a belief in man so magical as Santa Claus for just a bit longer than they do.

    Merry Christmas Stephany!

    I love silent night!

When we have our own place I really want a REAL tree even though I know they are a mess. I just love the smell of them 🙂

Great post! I love that you wrap presents for your dog. Rose Kitten gets her own little stocking 🙂 Glad to see you on the artificial tree bandwagon! I've had an artificial one ever since I can remember – I think real would be too much of a pain, too messy, and kind of sad knowing it was ripped out of the ground just to sit in my house for a couple of weeks 🙁

I love this! Um, sometimes I still wish I believed in Santa Claus and I love that my parents still give us presents "from Santa," even though we all "know better."

I HATE the Christmas Shoes song. It is easily one of the worst Christmas songs ever written. It's all about the commercialism of Christmas. I mean, for crying out loud, this child's mother is DYING and he's off buying her SHOES?! So she can "look good for Jesus"?! JESUS DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR SHOES. He should be off spending TIME with his dying mother, not buying her things. It's disgusting.

LOL, sorry for the rant, but I REALLY hate that song.

You crack me up! I can't think of any confessions now (other than I'd rather be home than at work – four days off starts in less than three hours!), but I hope you have a VERY Merry Christmas! Enjoy hosting dinner with your family!

Haha, I did ask my parents when I was younger how Santa was able to give presents if there wasn't a chimney and they told me it was all about magic and he could make anything happen. 🙂

I'm still terrrrrrrified of "Carol of the Bells," as previously noted – and I've never heard of the other two songs you mentioned! My boyfriend's mom passed away on Christmas Day, so it's a tough holiday for him; I worry about the same thing, even if I don't celebrate it!

My family always used to have a real tree. When my mom announced she wanted to get an artificial one, I cried. The deal was that if we switched to artificial it had to go up the weekend after Thanksgiving. We've stuck to that so far.

I always wrap my dogs presents.

When I was about 17 or 18, my parents didn't do Santa and I totally freaked out. I was really disappointed when I woke up and there was nothing sitting out waiting for me to come in our living room and see it. The next year my parents laid something out for me, but then the year after that my mom asked me if I was gonna freak out again if they didn't lay anything in front of our tree, and I said no, it was okay if they didn't. It seems funny to me that I reacted the way I did when they didn't leave anything the first time. I guess you get so used to that excitement and surprise of seeing something laying out for you that it takes you aback whenever it's not there one year.

Now, I have a question for you. I remember you saying that you had an Etsy shop, and I was wondering if you would like to do a guest post about your shop on my blog. I can write up some questions for you, and whenever you have a chance to answer them you can just email them back to me. If you like, you can send some pictures of some things you're selling in your shop, and a picture of yourself if you want. Let me know what you think, because I'd love to feature you! 😀

Same here on #7. It's scary because you don't want to ruin this time of year. But no matter what happens you have to stay positive and remember all the reasons we celebrate Christmas.

Also… your Giveaway! I'm on it. I'm catching up on all your posts now 🙂 So exciting!!
