MAY GOALS
1) Work out every day in May. Not complete, but I have a very good reason for it. I was doing really well all the way up until my mole removal procedure, and then I got nervous to do too many Peloton workouts because of the placement of my stitches. I didn’t want to pull a stitch by accident! I could have continued to exercise with long walks, but I didn’t. However, I still managed 19 days of workouts, which is a whole lot better than April, when I only managed three workouts.
2) Check my bank account every day. Not complete. I’m still struggling with how I want to budget, so I think I may end up going back to the way I used to do it. At least then I was doing something.
3) Schedule a LASIK consultation. Not complete. I just kept putting off the phone call, like the true millenial I am.
4) Get my skin tags removed. Not complete. My mole removal was front of mind for me in May.
5) Do not use my phone until my morning workout is complete. Complete! I am really proud of myself for kicking ass with this goal. It makes me feel so good and productive.
JUNE GOALS
1) Schedule a consultation with a dietician. I wrote about my goal to work with a dietician in a post I wrote last week, and I want to get the process started this week. I’m excited to work with a dietician and will definitely blog about my experience.
2) Schedule a LASIK consultation. Rollover goal.
3) Attend at least one Pride event. It’s Pride month, friends! I have never really involved myself in Pride for reasons I should probably talk about in therapy (and perhaps will blog about), but I am hoping to at least attend our local Pride march. Our city also throws a lot of other events like block parties and festivals, and it makes me grateful to live in an area of Florida that loves to celebrate queerness, especially considering all of the anti-LGBT legislation happening in our state.
4) Get my skin tags removed. Rollover goal.
5) Use the “Downtime” feature of my phone to stay off apps in the evening. Just as I was in a bad habit of using my phone first thing in the morning and delaying my workout, I am also in a habit of using my phone in the evening and delaying my nighttime routine. If I’m not scrolling Instagram or a Reddit forum, I’m playing phone games, and it’s a problem. So I finally implemented “Downtime” on my phone from 6:30pm-9:30pm Monday-Thursday every week. (I may extend the downtime into the evening if I find myself scrolling too much once I’m in bed.) This will hopefully keep me away from all sorts of apps so that I can just focus on making dinner, watching TV, cleaning up, and doing my nighttime routine without getting distracted by my phone every .5 seconds. I’m not sure what I’m going to do about podcasts – maybe I’ll just stream a specific one from my laptop at night? Will report back!

Nice work on getting your workouts done in the morning before phone time! I don’t know if the iPhone has something similar, but my phone has “extreme battery saver” where you can save battery by basically shutting down all apps except the ones you allow. I usually use this for backpacking as I want to save battery and it keeps the apps from working in the background or sending notifications. BUT it also won’t let you use one that is not on the approved list unless you do another approval process. So I allow the Libby app and my camera basically, so that I can listen to audiobooks and take photos but nothing else. Maybe for downtime if the computer podcast does not work, you could just allow that one app to be used during the downtime hours? Good luck!
Stephany
I figured out that I can basically do the same thing on iPhone. I just had to change the settings to allow for my podcast/Libby apps! Easy-peasy. 🙂

You did great with goals 1 and 5- the mole removal is a legitimate reason not to work out, but you got in 19 days which is GREAT. And the cell phone thing is huge. It shows you that you CAN break bad habits and start good routines. Hmm, maybe I should pick a bad habit to work on this month…
Happy Pride Month! My daughter is also thinking of attending a Pride event. We also luckily live in a more progressive area of the state… but we still all share the same governor. Sigh.
Stephany
I’d be interested in knowing if you do find a bad habit to try and break. Baby steps!
Happy Pride to your daughter! Can’t lie – I feel a little wary of going to a Pride parade in the climate we’re in, but hoping it is a happy, joyful event for all. <3
Engie
Oh, I love a good PRIDE parade! I can’t wait to hear all about what you do to celebrate Pride month!
Stephany
Thanks, Engie! We have a few ideas bookmarked and I’m really looking forward to immersing myself in Pride Month!
Alondra Larregui
It’s so saddening to hear about the anti-LGBT legislation going on in Florida, honestly. Actually, my introverted self hasn’t gone to any pride festival, ever. I’d love to join my friends and celebrate this month with them once and for all!
I wish you success on goal #5; it’s not always easy, but it can be so rewarding as one realizes how much we can do when we’re away from our phones. Time slows down and my mind is at ease, in my case. I hope it works out for you as well! <3
Stephany
I have really, really enjoyed setting up downtime on my phone at night! It helps me stay off my phone and not be so tied into what’s happening on Instagram or getting sucked into a phone game. I think I’ll keep this up well after the month is over!
Nicole MacPherson
Happy Pride, Stephany! I’m always so excited to see the celebrations.
With regard to LASIK – my son had it done on Wednesday! I had it done myself back in 2000 and I can tell you that WOW, the technology has improved. He had a little bit of discomfort the first day but nothing to speak of. He could see quite well even on the day of surgery, and the next day he had 20/15 vision! How amazing is that? And he’s young – only 19 – but he’s facing a life without glasses! At least until he’s in his 40s and needs readers, but whatever.
19 workouts is something to celebrate! Go you!
Stephany
I am so glad to hear that your son had such a positive experience with LASIK. I think I might be one of the unlucky ones that needs PRK since I have such terrible astigmatism, but I won’t know until I get the consultation. Crossing my fingers I can go ahead with LASIK and get it done next year!
Kim
19 workouts! You rock! And it was so smart to rest and not risk messing up those stitches! <3 I am proud of you for waiting to use your phone after your workout in the mornings too!
I am excited to read about your dietician experience and see what insights they have! And I'm excited you are participating in Pride events this year 🙂
I should try downtime – it sounds great!
Stephany
I have really enjoyed using the downtime feature of iPhone. It does help me to stay off my phone at night, and I can bypass it if I really need to do something on one of my timed-out apps.

I hope your work with a dietician helps you and brings you solutions. My mom was put on a diet by my grandma when she was 10 or something, and it really screwed her up. She would lose and gain weight over and over again, her entire life. She was about 300lbs when she went into her final decline. She tried very hard to not see fat as being ugly, but it was a struggle and she hated that about herself. I think if she had never been on a diet, she might have weighed closer to 150 as she aged. More than my 110 lb grandma wanted, but much more comfortable. Sigh.
I’m neurotic and look at my bank app every single day. I also pay my credit card pretty much every day. I hate seeing the balance grow, it makes me nervous. I also keep a physical checkbook. My husband and daughter cannot be bothered and just trust that the bank is right and keep enough of a cushion in their accounts so they don’t have to worry. Clearly, my husband and I have separate accounts, or else we would be divorced by now. We would drive each other nuts otherwise.
Stephany
Man, I wish I was more like you with my bank account! I need to get into a habit of checking it daily, if only so I can feel more comfortable with my spending habits.
San
19 workouts! That’s amazing. You can build right upon this in June! 🙂 I understand that you were careful after your mole removal – no need to tear any stitches.
Even if you didn’t do that great on your goals in May, there’s always June and you are already setup with a great new goal list.
Happy Pride Month 🙂 I am excited to see all the Pride celebrations!
Stephany
I was so scared about tearing stitches! I didn’t even feel comfortable doing a low-key spin class. Ah, well. At least I got in a ton of workouts beforehand!
Kate
I’ve been wanting to work with a dietitian, too, especially as I talk to more of them for my day job writing for a hospital. I’ve gotta go read your other post! Good luck to you; hope it helps you reach the outc ome/lifestyle you’re looking for.
Stephany
I hope you can find a great one to work with as well! I haven’t started my search yet, but I need to get that going because I have very strict parameters of the type of dietician I want!
Sarah Jedd
These are SO good. I was doing a good job of setting micro goals very month but then something happened in March and IT IS ALL THE SUDDEN JUNE. Thanks for the inspo.
Stephany
Glad to help! I am also not sure how it’s already June. HOW?!
Lisa of Lisa's Yarns
Happy Pride Month! Maybe you and your GF can attend something together? I’ve never attended any pride events but I really should!
Your # of workouts is great! My # of workouts lately is pretty terrible. Work was still pretty hectic in May so I wasn’t great about running on Mondays and Fridays. And I hurt my arm in the late summer/early spring so strength training is hard as I can’t do most upper body stuff. I probably need to see a doctor about my arm issue because it’s been going on for months!
When you mentioned mole removal last month, it was the final kick in the pants to schedule a skin check w/ a dermatologist. I go next Monday. I also want to talk to him about an age spot that developed during my pregnancy with paul. Apparently they can be removed. It’s not super noticeable as it’s kind of by my temple but it’s pretty large so I don’t love it. Hopefully he doesn’t find any concerning spots on my body. After watching Phil recover from his skin cancer removal, I hope to NEVER go through that experience – esp on my nose!
Stephany
Yes, the goal is to go to some of these Pride events with Elizabeth. 🙂
It’s much easier to get in 19 workouts when I work a flexible job from home and don’t have two very young kids to deal with!
Phil’s skin cancer removal definitely sounded terrible! Luckily, most mole removals are relatively easy!
Daria
Great goals! I need all the inspiration I can get. Keep us updated on your progress. I, too, need to schedule a dermatologist appointment. Exercise is… nonexistent for me right now – need to start small and build from there.
Stephany
Those derm appointments are so important, but so easy to let fall to the wayside! After having three atypical moles during my last two appointments, it’s something I have to be as diligent as possible about now!
Anne
Good on you for prioritizing your health in a different way – mole removal >>> workouts. Sorry, but true. 🙂
And happy PRIDE! I have loved seeing your pictures on IG – I particularly loved the ones of you and Elizabeth at the bookstore. *happy sigh* I hope you have a good month celebrating YOU.
And you know my thoughts on the dietitian – YOU are choosing THEM. Take the time you need to find the right person for you. There is someone out there. Promise. <3
