No-Spend July | Recap #3

Week three! This was a very hard week for me. I didn’t have any social plans, aside from a few things on the weekend, and that meant I was feeling the urge to order Ubereats a lot more than usual. While I broke some of the rules this week, I am still feeling good about where I am this month and committed to seeing this thing through.

Monday, July 15

  • No money spent

Nothing much to report here. I am getting very antsy to buy a few things off my “Things I Want to Buy” list but I’m holding strong for now!

Tuesday, July 16

  • Amazon – $100

Oops. I broke the rules of No-Spend July. It was Prime Day and the vacuum I’ve had my eye on was $50 off, so I decided to break the rules for this one purchase. It is a need, not a want, because my current vacuum is not working well anymore and my carpet is in dire straights.

Wednesday, July 17

  • No money spent

Same ole, same ole. I have a little guilt about my Prime Day purchase but not too much.

Thursday, July 18

  • No money spent

I really wanted to put in an Ubereats order for lunch. I just wasn’t feeling the leftovers I had planned. But then when I was looking in my freezer for inspiration, I realized I bought a few snacky items at Trader Joe’s for this very reason, so I threw two mini pizzas in the oven. They were very satisfying!

Friday, July 19

  • Publix – $100

I did my grocery shopping tonight since I really wanted to have a Pub sub for dinner, but I could only have one if I combined it with grocery shopping. So I did! I felt like I didn’t get too much food and it still equaled over $100. Sigh.

Saturday, July 20

  • No money spent

I came so close to ordering Ubereats for dinner! Tonight was my sleep study and I needed something quick and easy for dinner. I didn’t want to make anything that involved using my oven or stovetop because, well, anxiety. I didn’t want to spend the entire time I was at the sleep clinic worried I had accidentally left my oven on! I had a few options that I could nuke in the microwave but I wasn’t all that interested in any of them. I figured I could give myself a break this one time because it was a “special” night and even opened the Ubereats app on my phone to figure out what to have for dinner. But then I took a second and that’s when I realized I would feel guilty for the order. I didn’t need it. I had already planned something special for after my sleep study—I didn’t need to do something special before and after. So I put down my phone and pulled out some items from my freezer for dinner. This is remarkable progress for me and I’m very proud of myself.

Sunday, July 21

  • McDonald’s – $10.59
  • Target – $33 (cleaning supplies/mouthwash/conditioner)
  • Target – $18 (gift for a baby shower)

In the above section, I mentioned that I had planned for something special after my sleep study. I planned to pick up a Sausage Egg McMuffin meal from McDonald’s on my way home, and that’s what I did! This breakfast was incredibly delicious and everything I had been dreaming of. It’s not within the parameters of No-Spend July but I also didn’t expect to do my sleep study in July, so I gave myself a pass. I also had to buy some more toiletries/cleaning supplies as well as a gift for my cousin’s baby shower.

What was the last thing you treated yourself to?

I think you did really well this week! My most recent splurge was for a book, which is unsurprising for me–it would usually be a book or yarn! This one, oddly enough, was cheaper to get sent to me from the UK than it was on Amazon, what? Weird, but I’ll take it!

That’s crazy that it was cheaper to be sent from the UK than Amazon! I’m always down for splurging on books and I have missed being able to do that this month.

Wow, you did great! I 100% support you on the new vacuum, as I said before if you need something, why not buy it when you can save money?

The vacuum was definitely a necessary purchase and I feel zero guilt about it, which is nice!

You made the right decision to buy the vacuum when you could save a significant amount! And that treat after the sleep study was warranted to. I am very interested in the results and what you will do as a result. I hope it wasn’t too hard to sleep in the sleep lab!!

My last treat was a latte at Starbucks at target yesterday. I took the boys with so they could have a cake pop and got a treat for myself as well. But I also got a treat the previous day – that day I had a green tea lemonade since it was warm and humid and we were going to be outside all morning. It instantly cooled me down from our sweaty walk to SBUX!

Treats on treats – I’m proud of you, Lisa, because I know that’s not your norm! That McDonald’s breakfast after the sleep study was SO good and I spent the whole night looking forward to it, haha.

I think you did GREAT. Think of all the Ubereats you would normally have ordered this week. By the way, don’t ever ask me to be your accountability buddy. I would probably still be saying it’s okay if you ordered Ubereats every day (“Well, it could have been worse!”) But seriously- the purchases you made were justified. It doesn’t make sense to spend $50 more on a vacuum because you had to hold out till the month was over.
I’m looking forward to hearing about this sleep study!

I’m not a great accountability buddy either, haha. I will always go for the “treat yourself” option! The other day, my mom didn’t want to go to our regular Wednesday HIIT class and I was wrestling with whether I try to pump her up to go, or let her take the night off. It’s hard to know what to do! (Mostly, I guilted her into going and she went, haha.)

I’m really impressed that you got so far as to pull out the Uber Eats app, and STILL resisted the temptation. Congratulations!

I think you would have regretted waiting to buy the vacuum for 50% more, you definitely did the right thing. I hope the sleep study went well, and that you get some answers on how to improve your sleep.

I KNOW – crazy, right? I was so close to making a purchase when I realized I didn’t actually WANT to make the purchase. Now, if I can do this while I’m not doing regular updates on my blog – that will be a big deal!

I feel you on the $!00 grocery trip. Food is so expensive, but we have to eat so there’s not much we can do about it. And yay for shopping your freezer on Friday.

I don’t eat fast food regularly, but everyonce in a while MCD really hits the spot. I want a sausage egg McMuffin now!

There is NOTHING in the world that tastes better to me than a sausage egg McMuffin. It’s my go-to for a delicious treat meal!

Yay in resisting the app! Sometimes., if I just open my bank app and check balances before I buy anything, it curbs my spending urge in a similar way.

I spent $250 to have a guy come and do some yardwork. Honestly, it was a splurge – we haven’t paid someone for yardwork since the year we moved into our house – but it took a lot off my mental plate, so it was well spent, I think!

Definitely money well spent! Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and let someone else take care of the yardwork. I’m glad you did that for your own sanity!

What a great week! And even better than the not spending, I think, is how mindful you are about spending, or rather not spending!
I treated myself to a boba tea last week. I’ve been trying to make/bring my own iced chai to work, but my latest job is in a town that has four boba shops all within a mile so it’s tempting to get a boba every day. But I resisted for most of the week and only indulged once.

Four boba shops within a mile! ACK. That is so much temptation! I think it’s a good rule of thumb to allow yourself one a week!

Stephany, the best part of this is that you are *changing your mindset*! I mean, you stopped yourself from ordering! That’s huge. So go you. And I bet your favorite breakfast went a long way to helping you recover from the sleep study. 😐
Hope these habits continue to help you. 🙂

Ice cream. Lots of ice cream lately. And a Wunderbar. Chocolate will forever be my downfall.

Such a good progress on your spending habits. Opening the app and then not ordering. Whoohoo.
