The high of my week was my beloved Miami Dolphins’ historic win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday! I think my heart rate is still trying to recover from that game. The Dolphins played like shit all throughout the first half and I was just hoping they could go into the locker room at halftime, adjust their strategy, and come out strong in the second half. But as anyone who has been a fan of a struggling team knows, I had very little hope of anything good happening. AND YET. They pulled out a win, overcame a 21-point deficit, and made history. Did you know that teams down 21+ points going into the 4th quarter are 0-711? Well, now that stat is 1-711 because the Dolphins pulled out a W. WHAT A FRIGGIN GAME. Can you tell that I am still on a high, five days later?
The low of my week was a dear friend going through a really, really tough time. It’s so hard when a friend who is usually so sunshine-y and supportive goes through shitty circumstance after shitty circumstance, and there’s nothing you can do to help, other than offer love and support. My heart is really heavy because she’s hurting.
An Internet find I loved was this amazing Tik Tok. I love a good hype girl!
One nagging task I crossed off my to-do list this week was calling my insurance company! When I went to pick up my birth control last week at my pharmacy, I found out that I was charged $36 for a three-month supply. What?! Isn’t birth control free? When I called my insurance company, they gave me the weirdest reasoning: Apparently, I can only get a free fill of my birth control twice a year. If I want to continue getting free birth control, I need to use UnitedHealthcare’s mail-order prescription service. ?!!?!? It’s so weird!
A podcast episode I enjoyed was Adnan Is Out on Serial. AHHH! I was so excited when I saw that Serial released a new episode to discuss the news about Adnan being released from prison. Like everyone else in the world, I was obsessed with the first season of Serial and I came away feeling very certain that Adnan Syed was not guilty. Maybe you feel differently and that’s okay. But after everything that came to light in the past few years and the way the investigation was fully botched by the police department and prosecutors, I am very, very glad that Adnan was freed from prison and I hope he can be fully exonerated soon.
The best money I spent this week was on fall decor for my apartment! Everyone on Instagram kept talking about bringing out their fall decor and how excited they were about it, and I realized that while I have plenty of Christmas decor, I don’t have any fall decor. I had to rectify that so I spent a little bit of money this week on fall signage, pumpkins, candles, and more to make my home feel a little more festive. It’s still disgustingly hot outside, but at least I can light a pumpkin candle and pretend it’s fall.
My plans this weekend include a facial this afternoon followed by a long, satisfying nap, a writing date with Mikaela and Eleni on Saturday afternoon, attending my nephew’s birthday party on Sunday afternoon (we’re playing laser tag!), and then hanging at my mom’s later that evening to watch the Big Brother season finale. It should be a good weekend!
What was a highlight of your week?
NGS
I can’t stop thinking about the Hae Min Lee case. Her poor family. Either they think her murderer has been released or they think that her murderer is still out there. Also, how is it that a seemingly nice innocent high school student had all these people out there with motives to potentially kill her (Adnan, Don, Mr. S., Jay, Bilal, etc.)?! If you had put Hae in a line-up and asked who you think would be murdered, she just didn’t check the boxes of a vulnerable person. It’s SUCH A WEIRD CRIME. I could talk about this case for ages, but I guess I shouldn’t.
The highlight of my week was seeing my dog get so pumped for cooler weather. I always forget how much she loves the fall and winter. I may be grumpy about the near freezing temperatures, but Hannah is prancing around and going on longer walks and living her absolute best life. It’s fun to see.
Stephany
I TOTALLY agree with you, regarding Hae Min Lee’s family. How difficult it must have been to see everyone cheering for Adnan. We sometimes forget that this story is really about a teenaged girl who was brutally murdered. It must be so hard to have her name and this case continually brought up without her life being centered.
Suzanne
Oh my goodness, sounds like a busy and fun weekend ahead!
UGHHHH on the insurance thing! So frustrating! I think I complained to you before about my insurance suddenly no longer covering the birth control I had been on for the better part of a decade. WHYYYYYY. I hate that they have more control over our medical needs than we and our doctors do. 🙁
Stephany
I just don’t understand the birth control thing at all! It’s supposed to be fully covered! And why is it that I can get my birth control covered if I do mail order but not if I use the same pharmacy I’ve been using for years?!!? So weird.
Lisa of Lisa's Yarns
Ugh, the insurance thing is annoying. For me, I have to fill at CVS except for things like antibiotics and I think I’m limited to a certain # of non-CVS antibiotics rxs/year. The mail order pharmacy is kind of a pain as it requires some advanced planning since the processing time is like 5 days! Insurance stuff is the worst to deal with!
I didn’t know Serial releases a new episode. I will have to check it out. I was thrilled to hear Sarah on the NYT daily podcast, though. Serial is what introduced me to podcasts all those years ago!
My highlight was my day off on Tuesday! I need more mid-week days off like that! It wasn’t a shouldless day but it was still wonderful to have complete control over my day!
Stephany
I love taking a mid-week day off! I’m doing that next Wednesday and I’m looking forward to it so much!
Nicole MacPherson
Ooooh your weekend sounds nice!
A highlight of my week was this morning: I was just finishing my run and I saw my friend and her dog (who looks like Barkley’s little sister, but isn’t). I was able to walk with her for a bit and cool down from my run at the same time. And it was gorgeous out! It was quite warm for a September morning (which would be frankly freezing to you but I take what I can get). I have a beautiful bottle of red that I’m opening tonight PLUS it’s Friday, which means my favourite dinner – Greek salad and pita with hummus!
Stephany
I need to know what “quite warm for September” means for people in Canada! Haha. We’re still seeing temps in the 90s (F) here in Florida in October, ughhhh. I just want to be able to walk outside in jeans and not be super uncomfortable!
Greek salad and pita with hummus is an EXCELLENT Friday night dinner! Love that!
April
GUUUURL I spent all afternoon on the phone with United Health Care re: this birth control stuff! HOLY HELL. Maybe we need to compare notes but I am certain its a conspiracy theory to keep us from getting our birth controls!!
Stephany
Well, I’m glad it’s not just me who is going through this! It must be some weird UnitedHealthcare issue, but it makes no sense at all. Ughhh.
Elisabeth
I spot some Anne books on those shelves!!! Love the new decorations.
Despite living in an area where fall is picture-perfect for what you want out of fall – crisp mornings, warm days, endless trees changing colour – I have ZERO fall decor. That’s a bit lame of me, eh?! I contemplated buying a cute wooden sign at a thrift store that said Boo yesterday…but I didn’t. Maybe next year I’ll get more festive. I do LOVE fall, though…just the whole home decor thing is just not in my wheelhouse.
Stephany
Hey, that’s okay that fall decor isn’t your wheelhouse! I think those of us in Florida who are still sweltering from the heat need some festive decor to get in the spirit of fall, haha.
Kim
I hope things get better for your friend soon <3
When do we get to see this fall decor?! Or have I missed it?!
Hmm, a highlight from last week… see a comedy show! That was Sat night though LOL.
It sounds like you had such a nice weekend!
Stephany
You haven’t missed it! I meant to show it during September’s Currently post but I forgot to take pictures! So it will be in this month’s Currently post. 🙂
Kim
Yay!
Anne
I tenth the fall decor reveal, please. Hopefully you’ve done it and I just need to catch up. 😉 (or are the signs it? I don’t want to pressure you if you’ve already done it, LOL!)
Also, yes to football and sports but no to concussions. Sigh. I know that was after you posted this, but man, it’s scary what they do to the players’ health… It’s one thing I struggle with, given my love of sports. I love hearing about the games, etc., but I hate that the impacts on the players are so significant. Sigh, again.
I can send you some fall weather, if you’d like? It was a high of 48 today. 🙂
Stephany
A high of 48! That’s craaazy. The high today in Florida is 86, sigh. It should get nicer this weekend – highs in the low 80s! It’s sad when that’s considered a cold front here, hahaha.
Tua’s concussion was so scary. I’ve never seen someone respond the way he did, and I was terrified for him. He just got married! At least he seems fine and I definitely hope he doesn’t play for at least a few weeks. I expect he’ll come back sometime this season, but man, it was hard to watch the rest of the football game after seeing such a significant injury.
Fall decor photos are coming soon!
San
I am so sorry that your friend is going through a rough time – I can relate so much as my best friend back home has been going through a shitty time for … ahm.. years, and while I don’t carry her burden, I definitely feel very helpless and wish there was more I could do for her.
Good for your for investing in a bit of fall decor. Where did you shop?
Stephany
Thanks, San. <3
I mostly shopped at Target – they had a ton of cute fall decor options for pretty cheap! I also bought a few thinks at Homegoods. 🙂
