The high of my week was taking a mental health day on Wednesday. It’s so nice to have unlimited PTO and to be able to take days off during the week for no reason at all! This was a wonderful day to myself where I spent the morning in bed, went to lunch with my mom, and got a facial. It was so nice not to have to worry about emails and Slack messages and work drama on a Wednesday! A secondary high of the week was a nice little cold front blowing in. We’ve had 50-degree days the last two days and it was nice to turn off my air conditioner and wear cozy clothes for the first time in months! This cold weather won’t last too long (we’re back to highs in the 80s by the weekend), but it’s been a nice reprieve from the heat.
The low of my week was late bedtimes. Why can’t I seem to get myself together to go to bed at a decent hour? I used to be so strict about my bedtime and wore my early bedtime badge with honor. And now… I’m regularly turning out the light around 11:30 or later. It’s a problem. What’s the solution? I’m not sure. I just need to implement a better nightly schedule so that I’m not going to bed so late and can feel more rested every day.
An Internet find that really impacted me was this anti-abortion ad from Rep. Eric Swalwell. This is the future that awaits us if we let Republicans control Congress.
One nagging task I crossed off my to-do list this week was mopping my floors! I am so lazy about mopping my floors. Thanks to my robot vacuum, I’m at least getting all the dust and cat hair vacuumed up on a weekly basis but my floors need a good scrubbing way more often than I do it. At this point, my goal is to mop them monthly, though I should be doing it biweekly at the very least. But hey, I got it done!
A podcast episode I enjoyed was Doppelgangers from Stuff You Should Know. I have one of those faces where I am constantly being asked if I am so-and-so or if I went to so-and-so high school. Nope, I just have one of those faces, I’ll usually reply. I need to find all of these women who look like me so we can form some sort of coalition, right? Anyway, this episode was interesting to me as someone who has dozens of Doppelgangers floating around in the world.
The best money I spent this week was $4 on a bag of Tootsie Rolls. This will be the only bag of Tootsie Rolls that I buy for myself for a long, long time because I am OUT OF CONTROL. I don’t even want to tell you how many I have eaten since I bought the bag on Monday, and I haven’t been keeping track so I can’t tell you. I am going to enjoy this bag of Tootsie Rolls and then move on with my life. Tootsie Rolls are going on the list of things I cannot have in my house regularly.
This weekend, I am having dinner with my mom and stepdad tonight, having a writing date with Mikaela and Eleni on Saturday afternoon, recording podcast episodes with Bri on Saturday evening, and enjoying football with the fam on Sunday. I may even make my famous oatmeal chocolate chip cookies on Sunday during football. I think I can be talked into that! (Okay, now I realize this is nearly identical to last weekend. Ah, well. I’m a creature of habit these days!)
What was the high of your week?
Suzanne
I am fascinated by doppelgängers! (One of) My current WIP is about that subject.
Hooray for unlimited PTO! And it sounds like it really IS unlimited, that it’s not just for show at your workplace, which is great. So glad you can take advantage of it when you need to.
Stephany
Yes, I am very grateful the unlimited PTO is *actually* unlimited. It’s been really wonderful to have time to take off, and I don’t have to worry about running out!
Elisabeth
I also am fascinated by doppelgängers!
I only know one other person who likes Tootsie rolls. I am NOT a fan, but a girl in my daughter’s grade LOVES them, so we offload our extras after Halloween on her.
Love the idea of unlimited PTO and kudos to you for actually using it. That’s the trick – actually using it!!!
Stephany
Absolutely – most people end up taking off LESS time when having unlimited PTO, but I certainly won’t fall into that camp.
Gimme alllll your extra Tootsie Rolls. I looove them!
NGS
Interesting. I don’t know if I’ve ever met anyone who looks like you! I wonder if it’s a regional look or something!
The highlight of my week is that we interviewed someone for the Executive Director position at the community center where I’m on the board and I think she’s a great fit and I hope she takes the job and makes my life one thousand percent better.
Stephany
Woohoo! I hope she takes the job, too. That sounds promising!
Nicole MacPherson
I hadn’t had a Tootsie Roll in decades, and then I just recently had one (it came in a package of treats for filling out a survey.) They are pretty yummy!
The highlight of my week was my husband’s birthday – I made cake – and we had our first snowfall. Rex LOVES the snow!
Stephany
Cake + snowfall makes for a pretty great week, in my opinion! (As I am still sweating whenever I go outside, yayyy.)

Unlimited PTO seems so great… I have plenty of sick leave days accrued by now, but I even felt ‘guilty’ to take time off last week when I was hit with Covid. (Stupid, stupid brain, I tell you. I think it has to do that most people in this country have to “earn” their sick days before they can take any time off…. I think it’s awesome that you took a mental health day and I should take a lesson from you!).
Stephany
Oh no, San! The American way has officially corrupted you. 🙁 You should not have felt guilty for taking sick time for Covid. It was a legitimate illness! Ugh. I’m sorry you felt so bad. I usually have a tiny bit of guilt whenever I request time off, but I quickly shrug it aside because healthy work boundaries > guilt. 🙂
Kim
Yay for a mental health day and cool front! And for such a fun weekend!
Gawd, that Instagram ad. So so scary.
It’s really funny you mentioned doppelgangers because when we were watching Bullet Train this weekend I said to Steven “this character’s face looks like my friend Stephany.” Ha ha ha.
The high of my week was taking a half day Friday!
Stephany
OMG WHO WAS IT??? That is soooo funny that I talked about doppelgangers the same time you saw someone that looked like me. Hahaha.
YAY FOR HALF-DAY FRIDAYS!
Lisa of Lisa's Yarns
I love tootsie rolls, too! And I like the fruit-flavored ones, too. I basically can’t have any candy in my house in general. I am an abstainer, not a moderator. But I want to be a moderator so I will talk myself into buy a bag of Reese’s PB cups and then I will eat way too many in one sitting and feel awful and then the cycle just repeats itself until the bag is gone. Ha.
A mental health day sounds so wonderful. I need to be better about taking time off but I would need to book it pretty far in advance so no one books client meetings that day. So what I should do right now is plan 4-6 days off in 2023 that are mental health/shouldless days!
Stephany
I definitely think you should schedule some mental health days in 2023! GO DO IT. I am such a proponent of them, and I think they are even more important for moms to have some time to themselves on a weekday!
Anne
Oh good for you for taking a mental health day! I’m not even going to get into my need for one, my inability to make myself take one, and the fact that I don’t get vacation/PTO so… yeah.
Moving on! Your weekend routine sounds wonderful – I vote you repeat as many times as you want! And, have you shared your cookie recipe? 😀
Not a Tootsie Roll fan, but … give me dark chocolate and I’m a happy camper. To each their own!
