The high of my week was getting my sleep apnea sleep study rescheduled for tomorrow! Originally, my sleep study was scheduled for August 3rd so I couldn’t pass up getting it done two weeks earlier. Am I looking forward to it? Absolutely not. Do I want to sleep with a CPAP every night? Nope. But do I want to sleep more deeply and feel better? Yes and yes. So I’m glad I’ll finally get this step done so I can start my new CPAP journey.
The low of my week was Lila’s matted fur. Oh, how I wish Eloise was my long-haired cat. She loves getting brushed and doesn’t need to be brushed nearly as much as Lila does. But, of course, it’s the cat that hates getting brushed who needs it the most. This week, I started noticing little areas of matted fur at the base of Lila’s spine and around her tail. I’m guessing those are just areas that are hard for her to groom because she is, ahem, very floofy. Lila often acts like I am attempting bodily harm when I bring out the brush, so I decided on a new tactic. Since she loves snuggling with me right before bed, I brought the brush into bed with me and then, when she was snoozing away, I started brushing her. It worked! I was able to get out a few of the matted spots before she ran away, so I’m just going to keep trying this method until she’s mat-free. (The other option is to give her a dose of gabapentin, which I have on hand and I’m willing to try, but I just really, really want her to get used to being brushed!) The goal is to get her fur all cleaned up and then continue brushing her at night until she realizes I’m not trying to hurt her. Baby steps with this one!
I’m currently reading three books. On audio, I’m about halfway done with Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg, which I’m finding super informative! In print, I’m working my way through Family, Family by Laurie Frankel and liking it a lot. And my e-book right now is Highly Suspicious and Unfairly Cute by Talia Hibbert, a YA romance.
A Reel I enjoyed was this absolutely adorable cat video. Eloise is now asking to be included in our biweekly family game nights after seeing this Reel.
A podcast episode I enjoyed was the Big Brother 26 draft on Rob Has a Podcast. This is such a niche interest of mine. Wednesday was the season premiere of Big Brother, and I am so excited to get fully immersed in a new season of my favorite show. I also love listening to podcasts about the show, and the lovely folks at RHAP are some of the best. It was fun listening in on their draft, their trash talking, and their frank assessments of the new houseguests. My mom and I do our own mini-draft (we only pick 3 players each), which we’ll probably do sometime this weekend!
The best money I spent was $100 on a new cordless vacuum. YES, THIS IS NOT WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF NO-SPEND JULY. But it was Prime Day and I really, really needed a new vacuum. I’ve had a Shark robot vacuum for a few years now and while originally I loved it, we have decided to consciously uncouple. It just doesn’t vacuum as efficiently or deeply as I want it to, and I’m ready to get back into the manual vacuuming game. I had a few cordless vacuums saved on my Amazon wishlist, and one of them was $50 off for Prime Day, and I decided to buy it. This is a need, not a want, and I’m okay with breaking the rules to buy it. The new vacuum should arrive today and you guys have no idea how excited I am to use it. (God, adulthood is so stupid.)
My plans this weekend include going to the dog beach with my mom, stepdad, Chip, and Lucy on Saturday. MY SLEEP STUDY!!! And a baby shower for my cousin on Sunday afternoon. It will be a busy, fulfilling weekend.
What was your last boring adult purchase that you were actually super excited about? What was the high of your week?
Birchie
Yay for getting the vacuum! While I would certainly like the vacuum cleaner to be able to vacuum on its own, I’ve always been skeptical of robot vacuums. I just feel like I’d end up running the robot and then following up with the vacuum and that it wouldn’t save any effort.
Doggo doesn’t like being brushed, but when shedding season started she suddenly let me brush her and once she stopped shedding she didn’t want to be brushed anymore. It was the funniest thing. Recently I’ve found that if she gets on the couch with me at night that she’ll let me brush her a little bit. In the morning when we usually have a couch snuggle she wants nothing to do with the brush. It’s weird, but at least it seems like I have a tiny window where she’ll take the brush.

Basically your assessment of following around the robot with your own vacuum is on point. That’s what I had to do! It just was not very efficient for me.
Lila has been enjoying some brushing sessions while we’re snuggling in bed at night, and I’m down to three little knots I need to brush out. Progress!

I’m so glad the sleep study got moved up! I hope you get the answers you need to move treatment forward.
I haven’t read that Duhigg but The Power of Habit was very interesting!
Stephany
I think I need to read Power of Habit next! I really enjoyed Supercommunicators.

First, that cat playing UNO. Too much. I mean, it wasn’t fair that everyone could see his cards, but his huge eyes!!
I have you beat on terrible adult purchases. I just spent $50 at Walgreen’s buying stuff for my colonoscopy prep. $50!! Whaaaaat?!
Stephany
Colonoscopy prep, ughhhh. Good luck!
Lisa’s Yarns
You saved a good chunk of change so it makes sense to break the no spend thing temporarily to save future Steph. I endorse that decision! I bought a water pik on prime days and if that is on the same parallel as a vacuum as far ans adult purchases go. It was half off and I will floss more now that I have it.
I hope the sleep study goes ok and you get some answers! I am glad you could move it up!!
Stephany
Man, I was very close to getting the waterpik, too, when I saw how much it was reduced! I went with the vacuum, though. Maybe next Prime Day, I’ll get the waterpik. HOW EXCITING.

Hmm, I think “no spend July” should be suspended for Amazon Prime day. And yes, it is funny the things we get excited about as adults. I still remember the Christmas where my husband was THRILLED because I got him a new steam mop.
Good luck with the sleep study! And, I can’t wait to hear how Chip and Lucy like the beach outing.
Stephany
The first time I used the vacuum, I wanted to tell everyone about how much cat hair it sucked up. HAHA. Being an adult is a wild experience.

We are back in the manual vacuum game as well. We still have our Roombas, and I still use them occasionally, but I’m in a stage of life – well, I told you about it in my last comment so no need to go into more detail about Rex and our floors – where I just need to do a manual job. Do I love this, no, but I do think our Shark does a better job. I still like Roomba for under the bed, in a pinch, etc.
I hope your sleep study goes well. I know at least three people whose lives were totally changed by their CPAP, in a positive way. One is my dad!
My last boring yet exciting adult purchase was my compression stockings, I don’t think it gets more Old Lady Vibe than that. But a few months ago I signed up for subscribe-and-save for Rex’s dog food and it’s changed my LIFE. Since he’s giant we buy the 14 kilogram (30 pound) bags, and hauling those from the grocery store was an ordeal. And then sometimes it wouldn’t be available on amazon. But now I just get it delivered every month and it’s so easy.
Stephany
I think I’ll keep my Roomba around for now – it does do a pretty good job on my bedroom carpet. And it’s nice to just let is run while I’m doing my own thing!
Food delivery for pet food is a GAME CHANGER. I’m on a third floor so lugging up the cats’ food/litter is a LOT. I like that I can make someone else do it, ha.
Kim
Ahh! I am so glad to hear you were able to have your study! I hope it went smoother than last time.
I’m so glad you figured out a way to brush Lila!
You are going to LOVE the new vacuum. Especially because I think I read you had a goal to clean some of the floors each day? Something like that?
Hmm, the last adult purchase I got excited about… bathroom organizers for my family’s river house. LOL!
Stephany
Yes, my goal is to clean my floors every day. Am I doing that? Maybe, maybe not. But at least I have a fun new vacuum to use!
BATHROOM ORGANIZERS. That is so boringly adult and I love it so much!
Anne
I already know the outcome of the sleep study BUT I am glad you are going to get the care you need to get you to where you want to be. <3
Oh, lemme tell you about when I went from a pathetic, $50 Dirt Devil stick that I *thought* worked to an upright Hoover with actual, you know, suction. Um. It was so gross. You would not believe what I pulled out of my carpet! I took a picture and sent it to my mom, since they got me the vacuum for some holiday or another. LOL. Adulting. Gosh, it's weird. 🙂

(God, adulthood is so stupid.) – rings so true… the joy we feel for doing adult stuff and spending our money on it…. Sigh. I bought things on prime day… like horridly expense hair products… why?
