The high of my week was receiving my APAP machine! It arrived yesterday in a great traveling case so I never have to leave home without it. I am writing this post on Thursday evening and tonight will be my first time using it. I will be sure to have a post up in a few weeks about how things are going! For now, I am just glad it is here and this long, four-and-a-half-month-long process to get it is over.
The low of my week was spending a few nights away from my girls. I dog-sat for Chip and Lucy from Friday night – Tuesday morning, which means I had to leave the cats for four straight nights. (When I dog-sit, I stay at my mom’s house because it’s easier. I come home every day to check on the girls.) They were very unhappy with me, even greeting me with, “Look who it is! Mommy Never-Home,” one morning, which was very hurtful.
I’m currently reading The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue, which I am loving so far. I’m only about 50 pages in, but it’s not a long book (under 300 pages) and my goal is to finish it before August is over.
A blog post I enjoyed was You Can Do It! by Kyria. I thought this was such a motivating message for all of us. No, many of us do not have any desire to quit our jobs and road-bike around the world. But I think there are other dreams we have that we just have to be willing to put in the work to do.
To do new things, it takes work. You have to get out of your comfort zone and cede some control to other people, the unknown and life in general. I literally do not know what’s around the next corner most of the time, and this is hard. I am a type A planner, but in this case, I am often going day by day, because (a) you will just disappoint yourself if you have too high of expectations or you try to control every moment and (b) it’s actually part of the fun.
A podcast episode I enjoyed was The Journey of Currently Reading on, you guessed it, Currently Reading. They just celebrated 300 “big show” episodes and as someone who has been listening to them from the beginning, it was fun to learn more about how they feel about their podcasting journey. It was a great episode!
The best money I spent this week was on Dayquil when I wasn’t feeling great. I don’t know if my virus was just mild overall or if the Dayquil really did the trick, but I was barely sick with this virus! This was my first time taking Dayquil for a long time because I once broke out in hives when I took Nyquil and I’ve been scared to use either medicine ever since. But no weird reactions this time around!
My plans this weekend include a podcast recording date with Bri tonight, a writing date on Saturday morning, game night on Saturday evening, and then the rest of the weekend is entirely plan-less! I’m off work today and don’t go back until Wednesday, so I’m going to have myself a nice little staycation.
What was the highlight of your week? What are your weekend plans?
Jenny
How did I miss that post by Kyria? It sounds amazing and I’m going over there to read it as soon as I finish this. Glad you got the APAP! I hope it’s going well so far. And, glad your cold wasn’t too bad. There’s been a lot of viruses going around. My husband is currently sick but I haven’t gotten it (yet.)
Stephany
I was really happy the virus was so mild for me! That almost never happens.
Fingers crossed you don’t get sick, too!

Those puppy faces… AWWWW looking kinda guilty 😉 or is it how they roll? My kitty overturned a flower pot the other day and OMG the guilty look on her face was priceless!
Highlights… My school year started! I worked two days: Wednesday and Thursday, off today, and meeting the students next Tuesday. Everything is ready for them.
Another highlight was the beach last Monday with the kids. Part of me is sad, saying goodbye to summer, but another part of me is excited for all things fall, which is my favorite season.
This weekend we don’t have much. If it warms up, I will probably go to the beach with the kids one of those days but today NJ is wet and cool so maybe hiking instead. get out in nature for a bit.
Stephany
They do look rather guilty in that photo! But we were just cuddling on the couch. Chip has a perpetual guilty look on his face, though. Probably due to all of the naughtiness he got up to as a puppy!
Here’s to another great school year, Daria!

You are for sure too young to remember the Denis Leary comedy bit about NyQuil, but I always think of “NyQuil NyQuil NyQuil I love you, you giant fucking Q” whenever I hear the word NyQuil. I don’t know what it is about nighttime cold medication, but I almost always have the worst sleep and most terrifying dreams whenever I take it. I don’t have this problem with just run-of-the-mill sleeping pills or even nighttime Advil. Anyway, glad you’re feeling better (you giant fucking Q) (you probably have to listen to all of this for any of this to make sense)
I’m glad you are loving the Rachel Incident! Me too! I’m reading Kairos which is very good, I can see why it won the International Booker Prize. The writing style is very unique and was hard to follow at first, but now I’m IN.
My weekend plans include saying goodbye to Mark as he moves back to university! I also am going to a concert at a winery tonight.
Stephany
I am the same way with any type of medicine that is supposed to make you drowsy. Give me half a Benedryl and I am DONE for 14 hours at least. I stuck with just the Dayquil because I was too worried I’d become a zombie if I took the Nyquil.
I don’t get the Denis Leary reference, sadly. Tell me again how young I am! 😉

Yay for the APAP and meds that work! 2 highlights from my week were 1. starting a new book and loving it from the start (it’s been a while since that happened and 2.logging off work early and going for a walk with my daughter Hope you are feeling better and get to enjoy this extra long weekend!
Stephany
I love when I start a new book and I’m immediately invested from the beginning. It’s such a great feeling! And YES to logging off work early, especially on a holiday weekend.

I hope you have a great experience with the APAP machine and that it makes a big difference in your quality of life! It’s been so good for my dad (well, the CPAP).
I rarely take NyQuil because it makes me such a freaking zombie when I do take it! But I am glad it helps you!
The highlight of my week was all the quiet time at home without our boys. I got to my parents today and will spend a couple of nights and bring them back on Sunday. The boys were so good for my parents but once I showed up they were back to their usual shenanigan. Go figure!!
Stephany
I don’t take Nyquil either! Anything that’s made for drowsiness makes me a zombie, too. I can take half a Benedryl and be knocked out for 14 hours AT LEAST. I opted for the safer Dayquil option this time around.
I’m glad you had a lovely week without the kids! It must have felt so quiet in your house, haha.

Oh a little staycation sounds so fun. Enjoy your long weekend.
I am looking forward hearing about your sleep. It will hopefully be glorious.
I am on my own this weekend. I plan on spending it reading and blogging and having up my picture frames. End then Sunday night I’ll see my mom and sister for a musical visit.
Stephany
That sounds like a lovely weekend, Tobia! I hope it was a good one. <3

I am so, so behind on writing about the books I’ve read and listened to. It’s ridiculous. I had an idea the other day, to start writing them up and then using them as my NaBloPoMo content. I could front load the entire month, leaving me more time for reading and commenting. We shall see if I do that. We shall see if I can even remember what I thought about a book I listened to 6 months ago. All of that to say, The Rachel Incident might go on my list, thank you!
I really hope the APAP machine works well for you and improves your quality of sleep. That will be a game changer in many ways, I think. Or maybe just one way, you’ll feel rested. But that can carry over into a lot of things, right?
I laughed at Nicole’s NyQuil memory. I remember that bit as well. The only cold medicine I take is Cold and Sinus Advil, which helps me SO MUCH. I’ve never tried DayQuil, but NyQuil gives me vivid dreams, and not in a good way.
Stephany
That’s a great idea for NaBloPoMo! Keeping up with all of the other blogs and commenting is the hardest part of this challenge, for sure.
kim
I am so glad you finally got your machine and can’t wait to hear more!
That is so hurtful they said that 🙁 I wish I could give you a hug!
Did you listen to The Rachel Incident? I remember LOVING the accent of the narrator.
Yay for the Dayquil working and you feeling better!
Enjoy the rest of your time off! The highlight of my week was getting to fly with Steven as the pilot in command! 🙂
Stephany
They have eventually forgiven me, but there was a lot of snide comments tossed my way for a bit. Eeks!
I wanted to listen to The Rachel Incident but I ended up reading the e-book. The accents were probably AMAZING.

I am so glad you finally got the APAP machine. I really hope you get some really restful sleep going forward!
I agree, I really like Kyra’s post. Sometimes we tell ourselves that others can do something but we can’t, but that’s not true (in 99.9% of the time), we just have to commit and go for it!
Anne
I know I saw that you posted your experience with the APAP machine, but I haven’t looked at it in detail yet. That said, I’m so curious about how long it took you to see a benefit – if, in fact, you have seen one. (Gosh, I hope so!)
Also, I think we need a picture of the girls in their mad-at-mom phase. Just sayin’. 🙂
