TGIF (v. 76)

The high of my week was meeting Moose! My brother and his family recently adopted this adorable dog who had a very bad previous owner. He didn’t take Moose for walks (even though he lived in an apartment!) and underfed him. So Moose has a lot of anxiety right now and needs a lot of tender loving care. Which he is definitely getting now! He is the sweetest boy and the whole time my mom and I were at my brother’s house, Moose kept bringing us toys to play with. It was so cute! I’m totally in love with this big, goofy dog!

The low of my week was my period. I used to have easy-peasy periods—four days, normal flow, little cramping. But in the past year, my periods have gotten really bad. They are lasting longer, way heavier than they used to be, and the cramps are awful. Once or twice during every period, I am usually up in the middle of the night running a hot bath for myself because it’s the only thing that makes me feel better. I heard that periods tend to get much more intense before a woman starts going through perimenopause. I’m only 37, so a bit young for that, but who knows? The easiest thing to do is to get on birth control, which is not my favorite, but I’m not sure how many more of these intense periods I can deal with.

I’m currently reading three books. I’m still slowly marching through Stamped from the Beginning. I’m nearly at the halfway point, though! It is not a very engaging read, but I’m determined to keep on. I’m also reading The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan, although I haven’t picked up the book since Monday. Oops! And on audio, I have about two hours left of Pete and Alice in Maine by Caitlin Shetterly. I don’t think I like this book at all, but it’s a short audiobook so I’m just powering through.

A Reel I loved was this adorable Reel that Kim sent me. I love the internet when it’s used for things like this. People are so creative!

A show I watched this week was New Girl! I am nearly done with season 2 and it has been such a delight. I can’t believe I took such a long break between watching seasons 1 and 2! Gah.

A podcast episode I enjoyed was Power Ranking the Books of 2005 on the Book Riot podcast. This was a fun walk down memory lane! While Jeff and Rebecca’s taste diverge from mine quite drastically, I enjoyed this look back on some of the top books of 2005 and what made them stand out. I totally didn’t realize this was the year Twilight was released!

The best money I spent this week was $25 on lunch yesterday. Yesterday was not a great day; I was very moody, work was “something else” (to borrow a phrase from Birchie), and my cramps were not letting up. So I decided to order something off Ubereats for lunch and it was a great decision. I didn’t have the energy or desire to make something at home, and this was easy, simple, and satisfying.

My plans this weekend include nothing much! I don’t have any plans tonight so I’ll probably try to finish up season 2 of New Girl. Saturday is another low-key day with no plans until game night in the evening. I might do a mini-reading retreat in the morning/afternoon to see if I can finish The Three Lives of Cate Kay before May is over. And Sunday, I will do a workout at the gym, have a writing date with Mikaela, and run some errands. It will be a lovely mix of downtime and productivity!

What was the high of your week? What’s a show you watched this week?

Oh my goodness, Moose is loving the good life! He deserves it. I can tell that he has a lot of love to give, and now he has the right family.

I know that they are not for everyone, but birth control pills make the world right for me. I take them continuously so I never have a period and it is awesome.

I have to admit that Kate Cay was a very early DNF. I just didn’t bond with her, so I had no interest in her where or why. Pete and Alice is a book that I would have liked better if I had skipped the last chapter.

Boo to work being something else, and yay for a good lunch and a good weekend on tap! The high of my week starts today, since we’re headed out on a weekend getaway. That’s right – WE!!!! I managed to sweet talk Hubs into leaving the house.

MOOSE!!! Ugh, his previous mistreatment breaks my heart, but I’m so happy he’s getting so much love now!!!
Oof, those periods. That sucks! Something must have shifted hormonally. Boy, menopause really gets a bad rap, but it’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. I don’t miss periods AT ALL (you too will be saying this… eventually.)
Your weekend sounds great. I also need to do a mini reading retreat to finish my book. I told Birchie I would be ready to start Gone With the Wind on June 1st, eep.

My periods got SO bad after I had Owen. I got an IUD after having Hanna and it’s been life changing. No more cramps. Very light spotting. I still get period pimples and sometimes fatigue but the lack of cramps has been so amazing.

Moose is so cute! Lucky pupper to find a loving family.

Moose!!!! MOOSE!!! Oh my goodness, I’m so thankful that your brother adopted him and he’s having a much better life now. Moose looks like a sweet boy!
Hopefully, your gyno will do an ultrasound to check for polyps and fibroids. Those can cause serious cramps.

MOOSE!!! What a cute dog. That’s such a good breed.

Oh man… the closer I got to menopause – the more my periods were OFF THE WALL misery. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with it all – its just awful. My periods lasted like that for about 5 to 6 years…. being a woman aint easy man. Treat yo self to those Ubereats to get through!

I would talk to your doctor about an IUD. That is what I am planning to get when I find the motivation to make the appointment. Ha. The Mirena is a very low dose approach that works well for many people. You shouldn’t have to suffer like you are! My cycle has been very whacky since I’m in the late reproductive stage of fertility so my periods are way heavier which is typical because your body needs to produce more hormones to get your body to ovulate since egg quality really drops off in your 40s. I can’t wait to be done with my cycle!

When I saw you were reading “Pete and Alice in Maine” I thought – uh oh, I would not have recommended that for you. I really liked it but it’s very very very character driven… and just wait until you get to the ending. I don’t usually remember ending in detail but i was PIZZED by the ending of that book. But I still liked the book overall.

I did NOT like Pete and Alice in Maine, the dialogue was so bad that it ruined it for me. Ugh. Also it was just generally an upsetting book.
I’m so sorry your periods are so bad! I second Michelle in that you might want to make sure you don’t have any fibroids, because that can cause heavy bleeding. Especially since you’re so young! To have such a wild swing in periods could indicate a fibroid so maybe just get it checked, just to rule it out.
Moose! What a sweetheart. I’m so happy he’s in a loving home now.

I third checking for fibroids, and assuming all is well either going on the pill or an IUD. I prefer the pill, I was on it for SO MANY YEARS and never had a problem. Basically from when I was 18 until whenever I stopped in my late 40s or early 50s, I don’t remember. My daughter takes them now, she has polysomething overian something (bad mom) which means she was having 2 very heavy crappy periods every month. She’s thinking of going Birchie’s route and getting a prescription for a daily so she doesn’t ever have to have one.

My high of the week: Spending Monday morning with my sister after a wonderful blessed weekend with her. I rarely get to see her and then it’s never without kids. So I enjoyed those two hours.
Another high: a call to an old (70 years) friend in Idaho congratulating him on retirement.

Low of the week: eating habit. So much ice cream because I wanted to treat myself and then I had a fierce stomach ache. I know better…

As for the period… I feel ya. I had such terrible flow that I ended up in the ER. Have someone check it. It can bey myoms and such. I have no real solution for you. Only I am sorry.

Apparently it’s called fibroid in English and not myoms. Anyway have it checked. I had them and didn’t do much about it and ended up having surgery.
