Have you heard about The Colbert Questionert? I first heard about it on a podcast when the hosts went through the questions together and I loved it so much, I wanted to answer the questions on my blog. Let’s do it!
1) Best sandwich?
When I was a kid, there was this hole-in-the-wall shop near my mom’s work that mostly sold meats and cheeses, and they also made the best subs ever. The bread was fresh, the turkey was delicious. My brother and I got a lot of subs from that shop. The shop is no more, but I still think of those subs fondly and I’m desperate to find a sub that tastes as good as those. I’m a simple gal when it comes to sandwiches, a turkey sandwich is good for me. Recently, I’ve tried branching out when it comes to my toppings and my new favorite sub is turkey with pepperjack cheese, onion, pickles, cucumbers, salt and pepper, and Boar’s Head deli dressing. Yum, yum!
2) What’s one thing you own that you really should throw out?
This one is hard because I don’t really keep things around that I should throw out. In fact, I’m the type of person who will throw something out and then a couple months later realize I needed that thing. Oops. I should probably throw out some of my sports bras and replace them, though. I can’t remember the last time I bought a sports bra!
3) What is the scariest animal?
Sharks. My brother loves them, but they terrify me. On my trip to Chicago with my mom, we went to the Shedd Aquarium and they were showing a short documentary on sharks and I don’t think I will ever be the same. Sharks are vicious!
4) Apples or oranges?
Oranges! I’m a Florida girl—we love our oranges here.
5) Have you ever asked someone for their autograph?
Do author signings count? I didn’t literally ask them, but I did stand in line and thrust a book in their faces to sign. Taylor Jenkins Reid signed Daisy Jones and the Six and Lisa Unger signed The Stranger Inside.
6) What do you think happens when we die?
Honestly, I have no idea. Growing up, I believed in the evangelical Christian idea that there is a Heaven and a Hell. Those who accept Jesus Christ into their hearts get to live with Jesus in Heaven and those who do not suffer eternal damnation in Hell. The thought of facing eternity in Hell was so traumatic and terrifying to me. Do I believe that they exist? No, I don’t. Do I love the thought that Grandma and Pops are together in Heaven and I’ll see them again someday? Yes, I do. But these days, I think I mostly believe that we cease to exist and we live on in future generations and the memories of our loved ones.
7) Favorite action movie?
The Italian Job. There was a summer where I watched that movie on a weekly basis, and it’s a movie I think about way too frequently. It was funny and heartfelt and the final action scene was so well-done. GIMME.
8) Favorite smell?
It’s hard to name just one smell. I love the smell of freshly brewed coffee, old books, Christmas trees, pumpkin-scented anything, and… gasoline, if I’m going to be weird.
9) Least favorite smell?
Ugh, wet cat food. The way my room gets stinky after a cat has used the litter box for a very specific purpose. Garbage.
10) Exercise: worth it?
Yes, it’s worth it. It’s good for our cardiovascular health! I’m just lazy about doing it.
11) Flat or sparkling?
Sparkling. Give me all of the LaCroix, please. Once I found out I could use sparkling water for hydration, all bets were off.
12) Most used app on your phone?
Overcast because I am always listening to podcasts.
13) You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?
Damn, this is a hard one! I might choose a classic hymn like It Is Well With My Soul but the version sung by Jars of Clay because it has a great beat.
14) What number am I thinking of?
14.
15) Describe the rest of your life in 5 words.
Knowing what’s best for me.
What are some of your favorite smells?

I love your answer re the sandwich, but I wonder if part of that is the romantic memory of the thing? I have fond memories of living in Gainesville and we would go and get Publix sandwiches before heading to the beach and then we would eat them on the beach later and for some reason, those were so good. I am turkey and smoked gouda with lots of pepperoncinis! However, I am sure that I’ve had much better sandwiches than a supermarket sandwich, but those were just fond memories so the sandwich seems great too!
I would have a hard time picking between apples and oranges. We grow both here, and both are delicious; I would say that my choice would depend on the season, so apples in the fall and oranges in the winter. I don’t want to have to pick just one!
Stephany
Oh girl, Publix subs are the BEST. I get them at least a few times a week. They are a cult favorite here in the southeastern U.S.! That’s not a fond memory – that’s reality, haha. I would choose a Pub sub over all other sub shops around here.

I’ve not heard of this but I like it. Your answers are insightful. These questions might stump me, truth be told. However I might do this on my blog. I don’t do prompts but questions that require answers call to me. 🤔
Stephany
I was definitely stumped by some of these questions, but I like when that happens because it means I have to think about how I want to answer the question. It was a fun exercise to go through!
Suzanne
I am going to bookmark this and copy it for NaNoBloPoMo. 🙂 Your answers are so fun. I love how thoughtful your “what happens after we die” response is. Favorite smells aren’t really popping to mind at the moment (although I have a load of laundry in the dryer and I do love the scent of freshly clean laundry). Cat poo is really one of the worst smells though. In contrast, horse manure is rather pleasant.
Stephany
I’m glad I could provide an easy prompt for NaBloPoMo – yay! I had planned to use it in November, too, but needed something quick and easy for Wednesday, haha.

These are all really fun questions, and I loved reading your answers!
Stephany
Thank you! I love how eclectic some of the questions were.
Elisabeth
What a fun post. I might also copy this during NaBloPoMo! I love questions like this.
Favourite smell is EASY – a Christmas wax figurine my parents got when they were married in 1972. It has a distinct scent profile. When I got married, my mother gifted it to me as it was my favourite Christmas decoration. A single whiff of that figurine = Christmas for me. It also permeates all the other decor stored with it, so our stockings and most other Christmas decorations have the same smell. Love.
I was also raised in an Evangelical family and have maintained many of the same faith points from my childhood, but have increasingly distanced myself from legalism which pervaded the churches I attended as a kid. I have a huge fascination with reading about religious cults and it’s so sad to me how half-truths can end up being so much more destructive than lies. I will add that I adhere to a firm belief in Heaven and Hell, but respect the fact that many others do not. I still love C. S. Lewis’ quote: Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important. And I appreciate your answer of that you don’t know.
Jars of Clay…now THAT takes me back 🙂
Stephany
I love that you have such a strong memory of a favorite smell!
Thanks for your thoughtful comment on what happens when we die – it’s really hard to know what will happen. I’d like to believe there is a Heaven where I will be reunited with my grandparents, but it’s also hard to reconcile that with a Hell where some of my very favorite people would be destined to.
Gah, I love Jars of Clay. One of my all-time favorite bands!

These are such fun questions!
Favorite smell? My husband after he has done work in the yard. There’s something about his cologne + grass that just really makes me swoon. LOL. Maybe that’s TMI. I also really love cooking smells, like baking cookies and baking bread.
Stephany
I love that answer! Isn’t it true that were attracted to people based on the way they smell? That makes sense to me!
Nicole MacPherson
Oooh I love this and I’m going to do this!! Thanks Stephany! I like your answers too.
Stephany
Yay! Glad I could give some people blog fodder.
Meike
What a great idea these questions. If I ever manage to start blogging again I may do them sometime. Vanilla is my favorite smell, I recently made some vanille sogar and opening the jar is the best thing ever.
Stephany
I hope you do come back to blogging! Your voice is very much missed in the blogging world. <3

Sometimes I’m out walking and I get a whiff of something amazing…I think it is honeysuckle. Just amazing. It’s strong, though, not sure I would want to smell it every day.
Favorite sandwich would probably be a good BLTA, in September when the tomatoes are excellent.
This was a fun read!
Stephany
Honeysuckle is an amazing scent! I love that you can smell it on your walks – how fun.
Jenny
It’s funny because I ALSO immediately thought “this would be good for NaBloPoMo!” I guess we’re all getting geared up for it.
Hmm, one favorite smell- that would be hard. A Christmas tree? Pumpkin waffles? The ocean? There are so many.
This was fun and I liked reading your answers!
Stephany
I’m glad I could help people out with a NaBloPoMo topic! I was actually planning on using this for NaBloPoMo but needed a blog topic for last Wednesday. Ha!

I had not heard of this! These are fun questions so I will have to answer them at some point. My favorite smell is the smell of my mom or brother’s house on thanksgiving morning. They are the ones that host our thanksgiving and are both amazing cooks. I love the smell of the turkey roasting and the mirepoix sautéing for the stuffing base. It’s glorious. I also love the smell of coffee brewing and the smell of fresh cut grass!
Stephany
Mmm… yes, the smell of Thanksgiving dinner cooking is a good one!
Daria
Amazingly fun questions! Enjoyed reading your answers! Favorite smells… Oh so many. Apples, pumpkin, cut grass, ocean, even seaweed, tree bark, fresh laundry. Damp leaves! My interior car wipes lol
Stephany
I can’t believe I forgot about the smell of the ocean! That’s a great one!

Haha, I am jumping on the bandwagon and will steal this for NaBloPoMo… looks like we’re going to see this questionnaire pop up here and there. Which is great, because I had not seen this one before. Such fun questions. I agree that hardly anything beats the smell of freshly brewed coffee…. I loved the smell before I loved drinking it 😉 I also love vanilla-anything – pretty basic, I know, but it’s true.
It’s refreshing to hear that you’re someone who easily throws out stuff. I like to declutter but often err on the side of caution when I am not 100% sure and keep it. LOL
