TGIF (v. 77)

The high of my week was seeing Superman! My mom and I had a lovely movie date on Tuesday evening to see the movie, which was so, so good. I’ve had a movie hangover after seeing it and just want to go straight to the movie theater to watch it again! David Corenswet can get it. *fans self*

Some of the movie hits too close to home, though, because Lex Luthor’s actions are way too familiar (jailing his enemies, trying to get rid of all the “aliens,” starting a separate task force to round them all up, working with the government on these specific initiatives, etc.). It was all a bit too prescient.

The low of my week was an official diagnosis of moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. Yes, the doctor’s appointments continue! It’s finally time to deal with this carpal tunnel pain, which I first saw an orthopedic about back in May. The earliest appointment for a nerve conduction study to diagnose the severity of my carpal tunnel syndrome was July 22nd! I had the study done on Tuesday and it was quite the weird experience. The doctor put a bunch of electrodes on various parts of my hand and wrist and then would use a different electrode to deliver a mild electrical shock through my nerve, causing the muscles in my hand to jump. This was testing how quickly my nerves responded to electric signals—the slower the response, the more severe the carpal tunnel compression.

I don’t have the exact results of the test, but the doctor was confident enough to diagnose me with moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. The good news is that this can easily be reversed with surgery and I likely wouldn’t need to have the procedure redone. The bad news is that things are getting progressively worse and I will likely need surgery at some point. It’s a lot to think about! I have a follow-up appointment with my orthopedic next week to go through my results and talk about my next steps.

I’m currently reading only one book! This is unheard of for me, but I finished an audiobook earlier this week and have gotten a bit behind in my podcast feed so I’ve been prioritizing podcasts over audiobook listening right now. The book I’m reading is Someone in the Attic by Andrea Mara, which is a super creepy thriller. You can tell how creepy it is just from the title! I’m enjoying it so far and very curious how everything will unfold.

A Reel I loved was this incredibly sweet “first look” video. The pure happiness in this man’s voice! This is the goodness we need right now.

A show I watched this week was Big Brother! We are in full swing with the Big Brother season and I couldn’t be happier. This show is a commitment (it’s on three times a week and I also listen to live feed recaps every day), but I love it so much.

The best money I spent this week was $50 on some new clothes from Old Navy. I desperately need new shorts, and I love the way Old Navy shorts fit and feel on me. So I finally did a little online shopping over the weekend. I got three pairs of shorts and a fun sleeveless top for $50! (Funny story: I was ONE PENNY short of getting free shipping on my order, so I found this $2 swimsuit sarong in their clearance section. Gotta get that free shipping!)

My plans this weekend include a fun girls’ weekend in Orlando! Bri and I are hitting the road to Orlando on Saturday morning where we plan to have a very low-key weekend with Jackie. On the agenda: cuddling with Jackie’s pets, reading, and being lazy. On Sunday morning, we’re going to a “Painting With Alpacas” event that seems like it will be a blast! And maybe I’ll convince them to go to a bookstore? Maybe.

What was the high of your week? What are your weekend plans?

I’m sorry to read about your diagnosis of moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. Seems like it could be fixable? Won’t slow you down?

I’d like the see Superman. I’ve certainly read a lot about it online but you’re the first person I *know* who has seen it.

HELL YES about free shipping. I’m right there with you, looking for ways to make it happen.

It’s definitely fixable and I think the surgery recovery won’t be too much since I’m not in severe carpal tunnel pain yet!

Superman was sooooo good. I haven’t been able to think about anything else since I saw it!

Well- I’ve heard a lot of positive things about the carpal tunnel surgery. Apparently it works really well, so at least there’s an actual cure for this. I know surgery sounds complicated, but I don’t think it’s that bad.
Your weekend sounds FUN! I’ll be working all weekend, SIGH, but it’s to make up for not working this week while I had jury duty. I ended up not being called in at all (YES!!!) so I actually had some days off that I don’t usually have. So I guess I can’t complain to much about working Saturday and Sunday. Have fun, and I hope you get to a bookstore.

I don’t love that you had to work over the weekend, but I am glad that you never had to go in for jury duty! Woohoo! But the stress of waiting would have taken me OUT.

I did get to a bookstore – yay!

Bummer about potentially needing surgery to fix your carpal tunnel but I am glad that it sounds like a successful surgery that you only need once… I say this as someone who is glad she had hand surgery but hasn’t been thrilled with the result. I probably need to do a post on it at some point to document how I’m doing 6 months post-op…

Have the best time with Bri in Orlando!! I hope you can talk them into going to a book store!!

The high of my week was going out to lunch with my coworker and her son after bring your kid to work day on Tuesday. Paul LOVES older boys so was delighted to spend time with her almost-15 yo. And he was so patient with Paul/tolerant of all the attention. Plus I love my coworker so it was nice to do something outside of work! Our weekend plans aren’t quite finalized but tonight we are getting together with another family for Indian take-out + games and the kids will watch a movie. Tomorrow I think I will take the boys to an aquatic center. There’s one 30 min away that Paul loves since it has a lazy river. I’m not sure about Sunday – Phil will prob go to his mom’s and I’m hoping he takes both boys!!

Oh no! I didn’t realize you weren’t happy with the results of your surgery. I hope you can do a follow-up post about it. That’s such a huge bummer, considering how long the recovery period was.

I love that Paul came with you for Take Your Child to Work Day! I went to my mom’s daycare a few times for that, which was always a blast.

I’m having surgery for moderate carpal tunnel in a couple weeks. I am a little worried about it but so many people say it isn’t a bad recovery.

Not sure if you get notified of replies, but here’s how it went! I had the surgery on Monday on my right hand, which is not my dominant hand but it’s the one I’ve always used for the computer mouse so I’ve had CTS issues for years. This was my first time being in a hospital as a patient and having surgery so I was grateful for the experience of having a colonoscopy last year because I knew from that what getting an IV and anesthesia was like. They didn’t put me all the way to sleep for the procedure. There was a drape that blocked me from seeing anything. I think I did close my eyes and zone out and I didn’t hear anything. I took extra strength tylenol as soon as I got home and I needed it. The pain that evening and night were strong but bearable. I stayed with my parents until Friday because it would hurt to much to drive. If I were to have hand surgery again, I would look for some front hook bras because I needed my mom’s help! It still hurt to put it on this morning (4 days later) but I was able to do it. I stayed away from my computer until today, and today I only worked 3.5 hours. If I hadn’t had a meeting, I think I would have taken today off too. The pain is much less now but some movement still hurts and the incision is very sensitive. My biggest tip would be to stay with your parents for a bit if you can so you don’t have to drive and can get help doing awkward things. Take it slow going back to work. Also ice the wrist as needed. You’ll need to tell them about the sleep apnea so they can adjust oxygen but you probably already know that!

I really appreciate this comment! Thank you so much for coming back and telling me all about the procedure and post-op period. I was really flabbergasted when the NP told me some people are back to work the next day! I doubt that will be my experience, especially since it’s my dominant hand. Good note about staying with someone for a few days! I was at least planning on staying with my mom for the first day since the NP told me I would have a nerve block on the whole right arm and wouldn’t be able to use it. Thank you again and I hope you’re recovering well!

Sigh, well you’ve already met your deductible so…bring it on?

I’m only reading one book but all of my Libby holds came in over the last week, and a lot of them are Hot Titles that I think would take a while to come in again if I passed. It is definitely not normal for me to have 6 books checked out at once. The checkout times are mostly 3 weeks, and it is possible for me to read 6 books in 3 weeks, but it’s also likely that I’ll be putting my Kindle in airplane mode to stretch out the hold times.

Enjoy the Orlando trip! I’d be willing to bet money that you talk everyone into a bookstore visit.

I was going to tell you the airplane-mode trick for Libby books! That has saved me quite a few times when too many books come in at once, lol.

I didn’t even have to twist any arms to get that bookstore visit – woop!

Ugh. Sorry about the diagnosis…but that means you’re one step closer to relief and a solution!

I haven’t read ANYTHING this week. It’s for good, happy reasons…but still. My TBR pile at home is insane. Like it’s literally teetering and I’m feeling mildly panicked about trying to get caught back up!

A $2 swimsuit!!! I have been known to spend more than that to get free shipping, although I’m trying to curb that compulsion. Honestly though most places I buy with I get free shipping, but Rocky Mountain Soap does not, and so I always really stock up on things when I shop.
I have a fun girly afternoon – pedicure and lunch with a gal pal. Then it’s cocktail hour with Rob! So maybe I’ll be following in Elisabeth’s lead. #intercoursing

It was just a sarong, so not a full swimsuit! But can’t beat a $2 sarong.

I hope you had great sexytimes, Nicole! (omg)

We saw Superman last week and I really liked it, too! The night we went was discount night and the theater was PACKED, which was actually really fun. It reminded of “the olden days” when movie theaters were basically always packed! (Thinking like back when I was in high school). It was fun to see a funny and exciting movie with an enthusiastic crowd! 🙂 We also liked Brad Pitt’s F1 movie this summer. The new Fantastic Four marvel movie is out now, too, so I’m sure we’ll see that. My younger son has tickets to go tomorrow with friends. Living in a “boys house” I am used to seeing all the Marvel type movies, lol, and I actually usually really like them! (Even if sometimes I’m a little confused about who is who and what is exactly going on… hehe.)

I am sorry about the carpal tunnel diagnosis. That really sucks – I mean, it’s great that it’s fixable, but also sh*tty that it will require surgery at some point.

Have so much fun with Bri this weekend!
The high of my week was moving into a window cubicle at work. (I know exciting times around here LOL).

An alpaca painting experience?!?! That sounds amazing! Cannot wait for details.

I giggled about your free shipping add-on. I have been there so many times — but a $2 add on is such a rare find! Good work!

The carpal tunnel diagnosis sounds upsetting, and I’m glad that it sounds resolvable, but ugh, surgery.

Argh that sucks about the carpel tunnel syndrome (which I had do google). Hopy ou find a good treatment plan asap.

Your girls weekend sounds real fun. My high of the week: meeting up with Kyria and spending two days.
Low of the week: spending six hour in transit when I wanted to meet a friend for a hike – which was cut short because I didn’t get there in time and she had following appointments. Sigh.

Best money spent: vacation with Kyria.

Thia weekend the hike (tough day, I was all peopled out and holed up) Sunday doing nothing, blogging, writing. Later getting ready for a business trip but right now I enjoy the quiet, sun and admiring my little terrace garden.

I’m glad that your CT is relatively uncomplicated and should respond well to the surgery. That is something, anyway! I’m also glad that you got new clothes! having clothes that literally fall off your body is not a good thing, LOL. ON works for me, too – and the price can’t be beat! (She says, as she realizes she probably needs to replace her 6+ year old leggings..)

I am so happy to hear that Superman is so good! From so many people. The trailer did NOT look good to me, LOL. I could do without the close hits to home. Ugh.

Ugh, that stinks about the carpal tunnel. 🙁 I’m glad it’s something they can treat and hope you heal fast when you have the surgery!
