NaNoWriMo 2019 | Week 1 (Days 1-7)

Happy Friday! We’re officially one week into NaNoWriMo – how’s it going for everyone? I’m pleasantly surprised at how easily I’m finding the time to write and how fun the writing process has been so far. That said, I had to seriously force myself to sit down and write last night so we’ll see how this weekend goes. Eeks!

Let’s dive into my daily recaps. I wrote these in real time, right after finishing my word count each day so you’ll get my on-the-spot feelings and the roller coaster of emotion I felt!

Day 1

  • Goal: 3,000 words
  • Actual: 3,186 words
  • Things researched: fun frozen yogurt flavors, bookstore and library collaborations

My first day was wonderful! I wrote in the evening, as I had no plans and it was a really lovely way to spend a Friday evening. I was banging out my words like it was nothing. I work best in increments, so I set a timer for 30 minutes and forced myself to write, write, write with no distractions. When the timer was up, I let myself have a little break of maybe 15-20 minutes and then it was back to my WIP and another 30-minute timer. It took me about 1.5 hours to write 3,000+ words, which was my goal for today, and I ended the day feeling super confident in my story and my ability to continue this challenge. If only every writing day was so uncomplicated and fun!

Day 2

  • Goal: 3,000 words
  • Actual: 3,048 words

Oh boy, day 2 was about the total opposite of day 1 for me. Every sentence felt like a struggle. The writing felt really, really hard and I had to keep reminding myself that that is okay. It’s part of the process. And all that matters is writing the words, not making sure they are masterpiece sentences. I know I have a long road ahead of me in terms of editing but I just need to get the story on the paper (er, screen). I can fix everything later. I know every day won’t be a struggle like this, but it sucks when they come so quickly into the challenge.

Day 3

  • Goal: 3,000 words
  • Actual: 2,150
  • Things researched: sexy book titles, georgia cities

I worked in three 30-minute chunks today. The first 30-minute chunk was in the morning and I spent it outlining the next few scenes of my novel. I am so glad I am outlining this way (a little bit at a time, rather than all at once) because after spending lots of time with my characters over the past few days, I came up with a really crucial plot element that wasn’t even on my mind a few weeks ago.

I did the next two 30-minute chunks when I came home after spending the afternoon watching football with my family. I usually use this time to frantically get ready for the week but instead, I chose to write and then frantically get ready for the week. Hooray! 🙂 But it reminded me just how easy it is for me to justify sitting down for an hour in the evening and writing, even when I have a busy day. That’s what I love about NaNoWriMo – it forces me to find the time!

While I didn’t meet my word count goal (which is fine, I’m way ahead of where I need to be right now), I did find the writing to come soooo easily for me today. Which was much appreciated after having such a terrible time writing yesterday! The whole thing was just flowing and feeling so good. I love these days! More of these days, please!

Day 4

  • Goal: 1,500 words
  • Actual: 1,632 words
  • Things researched: is red or white wine better for you, fancy beers, fancy vegetarian meals

Another pretty great writing day! I wrote a little above my goal, which is always nice. I wrote these words after work, writing in a 20-minute burst when I got home and then finishing up my word count goal after eating dinner. It was surprisingly easy and the words flowed pretty well. I also wrote a line that had me laughing out loud as I wrote it – a new experience for me! Haha. It’s super clever if I do say so myself. 😉

Day 5

  • Goal: 1,500 words
  • Actual: 1,540 words

Another easy writing day is in the books! I got this done in just under 40 minutes right after work, and it was smooth sailing from beginning to end. I like it when I can just sink right into my story and don’t even look up from the page until my timer dings.

Today was definitely a day about planning: I knew I’d be spending time writing after work so I spent my lunch break working on the blog post I published on Wednesday, and I also had to turn my mom down for dinner (we’re going out tomorrow, and since I know that beforehand, I can do my writing before work and/or on my lunch break). There’s no spontaneity during NaNoWriMo! That’s for sure. And I’m reading sooo much less because once I get into bed, I’ve got about five minutes before I’m dead asleep. Sacrifices!

Day 6

  • Goal: 1,500 words
  • Actual: 1,543 words
  • Things researched: IKEA in Georgia

I wrote all of these words before work, and it was more of a struggle than the past few days have been. The words came fairly easily but I could tell that the majority of what I was writing was utter crap. But hey, that’s okay! Shitty first drafts and all that. And I felt like I kept checking the word count, convinced I had met my goal, and I still had more words to write. At one point, I was 50 words away from meeting my goal and I whined to Eloise who was sitting next to me about it. She had no empathy for me, sigh. 😉 I got the words down, though, and I’m coming to a real fun part of the story: the first kiss between my two main characters! Ooh la la. I’ll most likely write that scene tomorrow!

Day 7

  • Goal: 1,500 words
  • Actual: 1,513 words
  • Things researched: what’s the noise you hear at night

Oh boy, I did not want to write today! I worked from home so I think it was just the fact that I was at home and kinda just wanted to curl up on my bed and read for the whole evening when I finished my workday. (I haven’t had much time to read this week and I’m missing it!) But I let myself read for about 30 minutes and told myself I had to start writing after that. I made dinner and as it was cooking, I wrote around 500 words, then ate, and brought my laptop to my bed to write the remainder.

The writing itself was a bit more difficult today – so difficult that I started the fun line of questioning myself. “I’m crazy to think I can write a novel!” “This whole scene is so boring.” “Nobody’s going to believe my characters have the hots for each other.” “This is stupid. I should just stop.”

But I pushed myself through it! “This is a normal line of thinking!” “Even Taylor Jenkins Reid wants to throw her writing in a fire at times!” “It’s supposed to be shitty. You can spice it up when you’re revising.” And on and on and on.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned in therapy is to challenge my thinking. Whenever a bad thought pops into my head, I can challenge it. “What’s the evidence that it’s true? What does it mean if it is true? What does it mean if it’s not true?” etc. It’s good for thoughts like, “I’m a bad friend” or “I’m terrible at my job,” as well as these thoughts that pop into my head while I’m writing.

And it worked! Because I was able to steer my thinking away from all that negativity and write some pretty good scenes. (We’ll see how great a few months from now when I’m editing, heh.) And I got to write the kissing scene, which was a blast. Things are hap-hap-happening for my characters!

Wins all around! See what happens when you do the thing you don’t want to do because you promised yourself you would? Breakthroughs!

Total word count for week 1: 14,612 words (29%)

NaNoWriMo 2019 | The Beginning

Happy first day of November, my friends!

November is my favorite month because it plays host to one of my favorite holidays – Thanksgiving – and it’s my birthday month. (Which is on Thanksgiving this year! Yay!)

And November is the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). I’ve been planning for NaNoWriMo all year long and now that it’s here, I’m feeling both nervous and excited.

I’m nervous that I won’t be up for the challenge. I’m nervous about failing. I’m worried about falling behind early in the month and not being able to get back on track. It’s a big order, you know? To write 50,000 words in a month. It will require waking up early, staying up late, saying no to plans with friends, and giving up a lot of my free time. Not to mention, my writing partner is due with a wee baby this month (!), so writing dates will be put on hold for the foreseeable future. (In their place: infant snuggles!)

I’m also so very excited about NaNoWriMo, though. I’m excited about spending lots and lots of time with my characters and in this world I’m creating. I’m excited because I love writing more than anything and I can’t wait to spend all of my free time doing so. And I feel good about my current work-in-progress (WIP). It’s a good story. The plot is strong, the characters are fully developed, and the romance makes sense. It’s a story that I will be able to see through to the end – and then past that, through the editing and revising and publishing process. (Fingers crossed, knock on wood, and all that.)

To help me through this month, I created a calendar. This calendar has my whole month figured out from a word count standpoint. My goal is to write the majority of my words on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays (I’m alternating between 3,000 words per day and 2,000 words per day each weekend) and then give myself a bit of a breather on weekdays (1,500 words per day). I also really want to finish the challenge before the last week of the month, since Thanksgiving week is always pretty crazy. I have myself writing 500 words on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday of that week but I’m hoping to be done by the 24th. (When I completed the challenge back in 2012, I finished in 21 days so that’s not an impossibility!)

So, here we go. November 1st. The start of NaNoWriMo. I’ll be providing weekly updates on my progress because I’m an Obliger (another Gretchen Rubin personality type) and I need the outward accountability. I’ll see you in a week, where hopefully – per my calendar – I will be 15,000+ words into this challenge.

Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? How do you feel about writing – love it or hate it?

2019 Goals | Q3 Recap

It’s that time again – checking in on my yearly goals! It doesn’t feel like much time has passed since my last check-in, but that’s because I did it an entire month and a half late, oops. I’m trying to be much more timely with this update. Let’s dive into my progress so far and what goals I’m hoping I can accomplish by the end of the year:

1) Read 100 books. Complete! I hit my 100th book at the end of September so I’m contemplating a big audacious reading goal for next year.

2) Complete the A-Z Instagram reading challenge. Almost there! I still have V and Z left. I really liked doing this super low-pressure reading challenge and I’d love to find something similar for next year.

3) Reread the Anne of Green Gables series. I’ve read the first four books in the series and I’ll likely be able to read the fifth book by the end of the year. This was such a fun goal and I’m so glad I reread these books.

4) Dye my hair purple. Complete! I did this in July.

5) Save $1,000 in an emergency fund. I have $800 saved right now so I’m feeling confident I’ll be able to complete this goal by the end of the year.

6) Get something on the walls of my living room. Complete! I could still get something on the other wall, but two of the three walls have stuff on them now so I’m feeling good about my living room decor currently.

7) Take control over my dermotophagia. Not really. The skin around my nails is a wreck, ugh.

8) Redo my bathroom. Complete! I did this in March.

9) Visit Ireland. Complete! We went in April/May. 🙂

10) Visit Washington DC. Not happening this year. Fingers crossed for 2020!

11) Build a necklace collection. Complete! I have around 12 necklaces now and I’m happy with my collection.

12) Pay an extra $500 towards my student loans. Not happening this year. Womp.

13) Go to a movie alone. I still haven’t done this! Argh!

14) Work out 150 times. I’m at 104 workouts so far. I think I’m going to get this done!

15) Lose 40 lbs. Nope, nope, nope.

16) Give Eloise a sibling. Complete! I adopted Lila in February. She’s the best.

17) Start saving for a new apartment. Yep! I have around $150 saved so far and my goal is at least $1,000 by August. (Pet deposits aren’t cheap, yo!)

18) Do a spending freeze once a quarter. I gave up on this in Q1.

19) Develop a daily water-drinking habit. Not complete. Will be working on this in Q4 and hopefully I can figure it out.

20) Buy two bigger bookshelves. I bought one and that’s all I need right now!

21) Complete Project 365. I’m trucking along, very thankful for my arsenal of backup cat photos to use on a day when nothing remarkable happens. I’ll be glad to complete this challenge!

22) Develop a skincare routine. I’ve been doing pretty well for the past few weeks at adhering to a nighttime skincare routine (much less consistent with my morning routine).

23) Start a vitamin regimen. I’m not as consistent as I’d like to be with this so it’s definitely something to focus on in Q4.

24) Replace all of my underwear. I need about 10 more pairs for me to consider this complete.

25) Write my novel. In progress! I’m hoping to complete NaNoWriMo next month to get me closer to the finish line.

26) Try 10 new foods. I haven’t kept track of this at all. I did try gnocchi for the first time last month so there’s something to add to the list! (Verdict: delicious!)

27) Track my money on Mint. After getting everything set up, I realized that system doesn’t really work for me. I’m back to doing it old-school style with a spreadsheet.

28) Get all of my skin tags removed. Complete! This was done in January/February.

29) Sign up for a paid dating service. Not complete. I’m using the apps and that’s all I need right now.

30) Visit five new-to-me parks around the area. Oh, this is not getting complete. Lol, Steph.

What’s Next?

Now that we’re in Q4, it’s time to kick it into high gear for some of my goals and lovingly let the other ones go. Here are some of the goals I’m setting for myself this quarter:

  • Read Vox by Christine Dalcher and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Theresa Anne Fowler to complete the A-Z Instagram challenge.
  • Add at least $200 to my emergency savings account to complete my goal of saving $1,000.
  • Start documenting the times when I pick at the skin around my nails to take control over my dermotophagia.
  • Go to a movie alone!
  • Work out 17 times in October, November, and December to complete my goal of working out 150 times this year.
  • Commit to my daily water-drinking habit. One full Yeti tumbler every day.
  • Recommit to my vitamin routine.
  • Buy 10 new pairs of underwear so I can end the year having replaced all my underwear.
  • Win NaNoWrimMo 2019 and finish my novel.

Whew! That seems like a lot but it’s really nothing massive. Just a lot of little goals. (I mean, other than finishing my novel, ha.) I’ve already started to think about and brainstorm my goals for 2020 because that’s just the kind of person I am. 😉

What’s a goal you want to complete by the end of the year?

Monthly Goals | October 2019

October is here, and it’s time to check in on how I did with my goals in September. I’ll give myself 2.5 out of 5 completion, which isn’t my best, but hey, it happens! I’m happy with the goals I did complete and will hopefully have a 5 out of 5 month in October! Here’s how I did:

1) Reach my 100th workout for the year. Complete! It took me until the last day of the month but I crossed off that 100th workout in September and I’m feeling good about getting the next 50 workouts done over the next three months since I have a gym to go to now!

2) Finish one full tumbler of water every day. Ugh, not complete. I’m so bad at drinking water regularly! This one is going back on the list for October. I’m going to figure this out.

3) Put up a gallery wall. Complete! I’m really happy with it, although there are a few adjustments I need to make and some white space I need to fill in. I’m just glad I finally got all those frames off my kitchen island.

4) Do my skincare routine every night. I didn’t do it every night, but most nights! I also realized that I was doing my whole nighttime routine wrong. My nighttime routine consists of tidying my apartment, washing any dishes that are in the sink, scooping the litter, brushing my teeth, and washing my face. In that order. But by the time I had done all of the stuff before washing my face, it was getting late and I was just ready to be in bed with my book. (Also, I should definitely start my nighttime routine before 9 p.m., but that’s a goal for another month.) So I would often skip that part of my routine because I just got lazy and tired. Halfway through September, when I was still struggling to do my skincare routine, I had a light bulb moment. I should wash my face first and save scooping the litter for last. Because I’ll never go to bed without giving the girls clean litter boxes and it ensures I do every other part of my routine – the stuff I can get lazy about doing – first. So now I wash my face, brush my teeth, wash the dishes, tidy the apartment, and scoop the litter. It’s working out great right now. It’s those simple changes, I swear!

5) Visit one new-to-me park. Nope. I kinda figured this goal wasn’t going to happen since September was such a busy month for me.

Okay, let’s dive into what I hope to accomplish in October:

1) Wear my Fitbit and aim to get at least 8,000 steps every day. I have a love/hate relationship with my Fitbit. I love how it motivates me to get moving (especially to get up from my desk during the day) but I also hate being a slave to an arbitrary number. Alas, I’m brushing off the dust from my FitBit, strapping it on my wrist, and going to try to get at least 8,000 steps every day.

2) Drink one full tumbler of water every day. Back on the list it goes!

3) Build my new bookshelf. I bought a small, three-shelf bookcase almost a month ago now and have yet to put it together. Sometimes, the best way for me to get something done is to put it on my goals list. (Total Obliger here!)

4) Buy only necessities for the rest of the month. I went on a bit of a shopping spree towards the end of September. There was a Thriftbooks purchase ($16), a bookish tee ($30 with shipping), a new phone case ($30 with shipping), and Target ($200 – but to be fair, $30 of that was for my nephew’s birthday present, $15 was for candy and toys for a charity event my work is doing, and $50 was regular toiletries). But I need to slow my roll when it comes to spending money because I have two trips and Christmas coming up and I don’t want to use my credit card for any of that!

5) Watch a Halloween movie. Halloween is one of my least favorite holidays, mostly because I don’t like scary things or dressing up. I try to be a good sport about it and dress up since my work allows that, but this year I’m going to be working from home so I’m glad I don’t have to think about something to wear. However, in the spirit of the season, I’d love to watch one Halloween movie I’ve never seen. I have a long list to choose from (well, it gets short real quick since I don’t like scary movies) since I’ve only seen one: The Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m not sure what movie yet (maybe Hocus Pocus? Everyone seems to love that one.) so any and all suggestions are welcome! Nothing scary, please and thank you.

What’s something you’d like to accomplish in October?

Operation Write My Novel | August Recap

Happy Friday, friends! It’s time for another writing update! August was a semi-good month for writing and I’m happy with my progress. November (and NaNoWriMo) is getting closer and closer, and I’m so ready to spend the whole month immersed in my novel. For now, these tiny pockets of time to write 1,000-2,000 words a week are all I can handle.

August 5-11

  • Word count: 1,810

This was a very good writing week for me! I wrote a little under 1,000 words during my writing date and then wrote another 800 or so on my own to make my word count goal for the week. I really enjoyed writing this week, too. I know my novel is going to need sooooo much work during the editing process and that can be overwhelming to think about, but I’m trying to only focus on writing this shitty first draft so it can be DONE. That’s my only goal right now.

August 12-18

  • Word count: 1,512
  • Things researched: small bookstores, bookstore interiors

Another great writing week for me and I wrote all 1,500 words during my writing date! (I’ve been struggling to get to 1,000 words during my writing dates so it was exciting to realize I can buckle down and get it done!) It was another solid week of writing, too, where I felt good about what I was writing and it all seemed to come rather easily for me. It’s odd to get two weeks in a row like this, so that feels really good.

I spend a lot of time in my head, wondering if I should even continue with this dream. Am I just fooling myself? Can I really write a full novel? One that is well-developed and makes sense? These thoughts come sporadically, but not only during the tough weeks when writing feels like such a struggle. They can also come when things are flowing well and the writing comes easily. The constant doubts are just part of the process.

August 19-25

  • Word count: 0

No writing date this weekend! And no writing outside of the writing date happened. It was a very busy week and was the weekend I spent in Orlando for the BSB concert, so any free time I had, I devoted to reading or napping. 🙂 Plus, I had hit a spot in my novel where I needed to come up with the next few scenes of the plot and I just wasn’t in the right headspace to think about what came next and how to move the story forward.

August 26 – September 1

  • Word count: 0

Another goose egg in the word count, but it’s all because I spent my writing date working on the next few scenes of the plot. (This is my new technique: only writing a few scenes of plot at a time rather than the whole thing at once. I’ve tried writing the whole plot at once and it always blows up in my face. It’s been much better to do it this way, to write the scenes as I’m getting to know the characters and their motivations.) I was struggling with what to do with my male hero, as I needed his internal conflict to start showing itself and moving the plot forward. And I needed to figure out exactly how my two characters were finally going to have their “moment.” I emerged from my writing date with a really great plan for both things and feeling super confident about my novel going forward. That’s always a really good thing!

September 2-8

  • Word count: 1,029
  • Things researched: different Windows operating systems, small cabin in Georgia, porch railing

Back at it! I am happy that I was able to write 1,000 words during my writing date. I had planned to write another 500 words while watching football on Sunday afternoon, but I opted to be lazy instead. Still, I’m happy that I was able to bang this out after two weeks off. The writing came fairly easily for me (a theme for August!) and I’m excited about where the story is going. I’m finally past the more introductory scenes and getting into the “meat” of the story, so more action is happening and it’s thrilling! I can’t wait to see how this story evolves the more I write!
