(1/16) Shark Heart by Emily Habeck (★★★★☆ – print, indie bookstore, 2023) – a stunning piece of literary fiction where a woman’s husband begins to turn into a great white shark (trust me, it’s not as weird as it seems!)

Reading Miscellaneous

Unread Shelf Project | January prompt: A book that starts with the same letter as your name: I chose Shark Heart for this prompt, which is a book I bought at my favorite local indie (Tombolo Books) with Birchie when she was in town in February 2025. I was drawn in by the gorgeous cover! (Books it beat out: Six Days in Bombay by Alka Joshi, Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent, and Sipsworth by Simone van Booy.)

Where I traveled this month: I spent most of my time in the United States, visiting NYC, Montana, California, Washington DC, Vermont, Texas, and Maryland. I took a short jaunt over the pond to the UK.

DNFs: Only one DNF in January, which was an audiobook. I started reading A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo since I had loved her other novel (Last Night at the Telegraph Club), but it did not have the same magic. It was a little too YA for my tastes and I didn’t love the way she talked about queer people. (I believe Engie told me this book was bad; I should have listened.)

Something I learned from my reading: I learned the very specific process of embalming, from the moment a mortician receives a body from the hospital to the final stages. Not something I thought I would ever learn, but there we go.

What’s Coming Up in February

Here are some of the books on my upcoming TBR for this month:

  • Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum – You’ll hear my thoughts on this book next week. So far, I am loving it so much!
  • The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton – I’m reading this for the Cool Bloggers Book Club, but I’m really struggling with the language.
  • Heart the Lover by Lily King – So much buzz about this book! I hope I love it as much as everyone else.
  • Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro – This book will fulfill my goal of reading four books from the Zero to Well-Read podcast.
  • Wild Eyes by Elsie Silver – I loved the first book in her Rose Hill series, so I hope I enjoy this book just as much.
  • Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – This will be a reread, but it’s one I’ve been wanting to reread for a really long time.

What was the best book you read in January?

Those are some good reads! From your list I’ve read (and loved) What Kind of Paradise, and the book most likely to go on my TBR is Shark Heart. My best book of January was Discontent.

I really liked Heart the Lover. I don’t know that I adored it, but I did really like it and I have the audiobook for Writers and Lovers (same characters) cued up on Libby, so that says a lot right there. I’m struggling with Age of Innocence as well.

With the way you loved Sky Daddy, I think you’ll love Shark Heart. A weird premise, but told with so much heart!

From your January reads, I’ve read “What Kind of Paradise” and “Promise Me Sunshine.” I’m reading “Age of Innocence” right now and also moving pretty slowly through. I’m kind of thinking I want to try “Shark Heart” after reading your review…I keep seeing people liking it more than they expected given the premise.

Shark Heart was such an unexpected novel! I really didn’t expect it to impact me as much as it did.

I decided to DNF “The Age of Innocence” last night. I feel bad as I have never DNF’d a CBBC book before but I just don’t feel at all engaged and reading it feels like a slog to me. 🙁 So I am cutting my losses and moving on! But classics rarely work well for me.

My favorite books from January were “Good Dirt” and “So Far Gone.”

I’m reading What Kind of Paradise next!

This will be the second CBBC book I’ve DNF-ed, sigh. I also DNF-ed My Brilliant Friend. I’m not a good book club participant!

I always love these wrap ups! I think I have only read one of the books in your January list. Actually nope, I just checked. I thought I had read the Shari Lapena book, but that must have been another one of hers! I did have What Kind of Paradise on loan, but I was in a reading funk and I did not get to it before it lapsed. So I will put it back on my holds since you liked it! Also that book about Polly Klaas sounds just up my alley! I actually remember that happening; you know how sometimes things were when you were too small to remember? Well, when that happened I was old enough for it to stick. I would really enjoy reading about what happened!

I think you’ll enjoy the Polly Klaas book – it’s so interesting! It almost reads like a true crime podcast, so it’ll go fast with all your travels and hikes and whatnot!

I can’t even remember the books I read in January without checking so it seem they are not worth mentioning. And that shows my issue with my reading life these days. Sigh.

I love the little reading miscellaneous in the end. How fun. Now I want this in my posts too.
