Best of 2018 | Recapping My Yearly Goals

Merry Christmas Eve, my friends! I have a fairly full day planned, starting with picking up all of the food we need for our Christmas Day celebration and ending with dinner at a fancy steakhouse with my mom and stepdad. (I’m also definitely finding time for a nap in between it all!) I hope you and yours have a blessed Christmas!

I wanted to kick off my slew of “Best of 2018” posts today by recapping the goals I set a year ago. I love to set yearly goals because it’s fun to have something to strive for throughout the year, even if I never accomplish most of them. There are some goals on here that I really wish I could have completed, but this year was a tough one for me and I’m just happy I emerged from it with my sanity (mostly) intact.

In any event, here’s how I did on my 2018 goals:

1) Lose 30 lbs.

Not complete. I may have even gained 30 lbs from the beginning of the year. It was a hard year and emotional eating is my coping mechanism, so weight loss was not at the forefront of my mind. It is what it is. I don’t feel good about it, but I’ve also decided not to worry about it.

2) Complete the Whole30.

Not complete. I’m not quite sure what I was thinking when I made this goal – maybe I wanted to be the kind of person who can commit to an eating challenge like this – but restrictive eating plans are not for me. Many people rave about the Whole30 and I’m so glad it works for them, but it’s just not for me. And that’s okay!

3) Cut out soda completely.

Not complete. Ahahaha. No. I love Dr. Pepper way too much to give it up completely. I definitely need to drink less of it, but I’m not concerned with completely giving it up anymore.

4) Buy a new couch.

Complete! It arrived in early November and is everything I could have hoped for.

5) Complete a yearly shopping ban where I don’t buy any new clothes.

Not complete. Oy vey. I forgot about this goal. I followed the shopping ban for the first quarter of the year, but then completely fell apart during the second quarter, and quickly realized that strict shopping bans like this aren’t good for me. I’m more of a moderator than an abstainer, you could say. All-or-nothing challenges just do not suit me!

6) Stop using plastic bags at the grocery store, Target, etc.

Complete-ish? I have cut way down on the amount of plastic bags I’m using, but I haven’t completely cut out using plastic bags.

7) Read 100 books, including four classics.

Complete! I may end up with 135 books read this year when all is said and done, which is the most books I’ve read ever. Woop! I also read four classics: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (★★★★★), 1984 (★★★☆☆), Persuasion (★☆☆☆☆), and The Catcher in the Rye (★★☆☆☆).

8) Give up all dating apps for the entire year.

Complete-ish. I will be honest here and say I added the apps back to my phone over the summer and chatted with a few people here and there, but none of those conversations led to any dates. And, really, I only used the apps for 1-2 months out of the whole year, so I’m considering this goal complete.

9) Try something new once a month.

Not complete. I’m sure I did some new things throughout the year, ha, but I didn’t keep track of them. I’m not confident I did twelve new things throughout all of 2018, so I can’t in good faith consider this goal complete.

10) Start therapy.

Complete! I am in therapy now and it’s going well.

11) Finish my novel.

Not complete. This is my number-one goal for 2019.

12) Figure out what my Enneagram type is.

Complete! I am a Nine with a One wing, and even wrote a blog post about what all of that means. I highly recommend reading the book The Road Back to You to type yourself because it has really been eye-opening in discovering myself.

13) Travel to one new state.

Not complete. My only big vacation this year was a seven-day cruise where I visited two new countries (Belize and Honduras).

14) Exercise at least three times a week.

Complete… up until October. The last quarter of the year, I completely fell off any sort of healthy living lifestyle. First, I was spending every evening and many hours on the weekend visiting Pops while he was in the hospital, and then, grieving his unexpected death. Healthy living just hasn’t been at the forefront of my mind these past few months.

15) Create a wedding album for my mom and stepdad.

Complete! I did this over the summer and they were so pleased and happy with the results.

So, out of the fifteen goals I set, I completed (or nearly completed) 6.5 of them. That’s not a great percentage, ha, but it’s better than zero, right? But even so, I don’t consider my yearly goals to be a failure. I have way too much fun setting my yearly goals and trying to achieve them that I can’t be mad at myself for not accomplishing everything on the list. And yes, I am most definitely planning on setting goals for 2019, and I’ll be unveiling them sometime next week!

Yearly Goals: Quarter 3 Update

So, I really didn’t feel like doing my quarterly review of my yearly goals because I am definitely not accomplishing most of the goals I put on my list. Looking at it now, I realize how differently I looked at my life nine-and-a-half months ago. For example, I put three goals on this list specifically tied to losing weight. And now, it’s October, and I’m nowhere near the weight I thought I wanted to be at this time of the year. But I’m oddly at peace with my weight right now. I feel good, great even. But that’s a post for another time, and believe me, I plan on writing about it soon.

Anyway, even though I’m a little embarrassed to share this list, I stand by the process of setting and regularly evaluating yearly goals, so here we go:

1) Lose 30 lbs. Not complete. See above. 😉

2) Complete the Whole30. Not complete. It’s not going to happen this year, and I don’t feel bad about it. I don’t even know why I made this a goal because I’ve never been particularly interested in Whole30. Alas, it’s not a goal I’ll be marking complete now or in the near future. (But never say never, I guess.)

3) Cut out soda completely. Not complete. What can I say? I love soda and I don’t feel like cutting it out of my life completely. I am trying to cut down on the amount I drink, though.

4) Buy a new couch. Complete. Hooray! It arrives on November 1st and I cannot wait.

5) Complete a yearly shopping ban where I don’t buy any new clothes. Not complete. Well, I did pretty well for the first half of the year and fell apart in quarter three. I should have known – I’m more of a moderator than an abstainer, so a better goal would have been to give myself a certain dollar number to stay under.

6) Stop using plastic bags at the grocery store, Target, etc. Complete-ish. I’m probably doing this 50% of the time, so I could definitely do better.

7) Read 100 books, including four classics. Mostly complete. I’ve read 100 books and three classics. I’ll be reading my last classic during quarter four (most likely – The Catcher in the Rye).

8) Give up all dating apps for the entire year. Not complete. Oops, I added the dating apps back on my phone over the summer, and I definitely should have kept them off. Maybe I’ll commit to spending the last quarter of the year without dating apps?

9) Try something new once a month. Not complete. This was such a vague goal, so it’s no wonder I haven’t really completed it. Although, honestly, I’m sure if I were to look back on my year, I could pick out something new I did every month, even if it was something small like trying a different restaurant.

10) Start therapy. Complete. Yes, yes, yes!

11) Finish my novel. Not complete. Well, I’m going to attempt NaNoWriMo in November, so maybe I can mark this complete by the end of the year! Who knows?!

12) Figure out what my Enneagram type is. Not complete. I finally bought a book to learn all about the different types to figure out what mine is, so this is something I will complete by the end of the year.

13) Travel to one new state. Not complete. Doubtful that I will get to mark this one complete, but hey, maybe I’ll find a cheap flight somewhere and can take a weekend trip by the end of the year.

14) Exercise at least three times a week. In progress. Right now, my exercise of choice is walking and I’m definitely getting in some movement at least three times a week, but usually more than that.

15) Create a wedding album for my mom and stepdad. Complete. Finished this project over the summer and I was so happy to deliver the final product to my mom and stepdad. They loved it!

6 Small Goals for October

It’s a shiny new month, which means it’s time for shiny new goals. But first, let’s take a look back at my September goals to see how well (or not well) I did:

1) No more shopping. Oh, boy, I had such a hard time with this goal and I ended up failing the last week of September. I bought a few unnecessary items at Target like a t-shirt and shower curtain, and then I caved and bought something that was sitting in my Amazon cart for weeks (a Bluetooth shower speaker so I can listen to podcasts while I shower because my obsession knows zero bounds). So, all in all, I was not successful with this goal.

2) Walk 10,000 steps every day. I did this most days, and I made the conscious decision not to on certain days. Sometimes, it was due to mental health struggles and knowing I needed rest more than I needed steps. Other times, it was just my body letting me know that I needed to take a break and let my body heal. (More about that in a minute.) I love this goal, though, and my plan going forward is to walk 10k five times a week.

3) Eat three home-cooked meals a week. Nope. I made my first recipe in months this week, so I did not accomplish this goal at all in September. It’s just so much easier to get takeout!

4) Schedule a facial. Complete! Unfortunately, I couldn’t get in until the first week of November. (Mostly due to my schedule because there were definitely times available before then.) Oh, well. It will be a nice treat to begin my birthday month with, right?

5) Sell my sectional. Complete! It took over three weeks, but it’s sold and out of my apartment. I just love being able to open my blinds and walk out to my patio without having to climb over my couch to do so.

6) Cultivate a better nighttime routine. I wrote about it, does that count? Ah, well. Why do the hours in the evening go by so fast? As I’m writing this post, it’s nearing 9 pm and I don’t feel like I’ve done anything more than make dinner, watch an episode of The Office, and take a bubble bath. How did that take three whole hours? Sigh.

Three complete(ish) out of six. Not my best, not my worst. I’m holding out hope that October will be a much more successful month, and I’ve got some interesting plans in store:

1) Figure out what’s causing all my back and foot pain. I’ve been having sacrum pain for weeks and weeks now (originally thought a massage would help, but it didn’t), so I finally scheduled an appointment with a chiropractor to get it looked at. I’m also going to talk to the chiropractor about the foot pain I’ve been having for the past few weeks. Walking has started to become really uncomfortable (not so much when I’m wearing my supportive running shoes, but definitely when I’m barefoot or wearing sandals or flats), and my joints crack like crazy whenever I stand up and walk a few steps. I may need to see a podiatrist for this, but I’ll start with a chiropractor and go from there. Oy vey, getting old is so much fun!

2) Prepare my home for kittens. I’m not sure if I’ll be adopting kittens in October (it’s a really busy month for me and I won’t have a ton of time to check out animal shelters), but I do have just about everything I need. I placed a huge order on Chewy.com over the weekend and now I just need to put some of the items together so my house is kitten-ready for whenever the time comes.

3) Get ready for NaNoWriMo. Yep – I’m attempting this challenge again this year! I have been working on my plot outline for a while now and I want to put the finishing touches on it this month, so I’m totally ready to start writing on November 1st.

4) Buy some new bras. So, confession: I’ve been buying my bras at Target for a long time now. I just cannot fathom spending more than $30 on a bra, even though it’s something I wear daily and is a pretty important part of my wardrobe. Unfortunately, the wire in one of my bras snapped recently so I’m down to just one bra and I think I’m ready to invest in a good bra. No more Target bras! I was thinking about trying out Thirdlove since it’s raved about on every podcast I listen to, but if anyone has a recommendation for a different brand to try, I’m all ears.

5) Journal every night. I decided to do this after I had my second therapy appointment where I forgot just about everything I wanted to talk about (a fun side effect of social anxiety). Thankfully, we found plenty to talk about but I’d like to have a place to figure out what sorts of things I’d like to talk about in therapy. I’ve already started this process, and I’m just reflecting on my day using a series of prompts (what made me proud today? what was I grateful for? what was hard about today?). We’ll see how it helps, but I’m enjoying it so far!

6) Do something politically engaging. How’s that for a vague goal? I don’t know what I want to do yet – maybe phone banking – but I do know that I can do something rather than complaining about everything that’s happening and feeling helpless.

What’s something you’d like to accomplish this month?

Six Simple Goals for September

Well, well, well. I am supremely happy with the way my August goals shook out. I accomplished all but one of them, but the one I didn’t complete was nixed for another goal, so really, I’m considering this month as a 100% success. BOOYAH. After many months of lackluster goals updates, I am really happy with the way I attacked life in August and I’m hoping that September will be just as successful.

Here’s how I did:

1) Go to the gym every Wednesday morning. Not complete. I did this once, but then decided it was time to cancel my gym membership because I just wasn’t getting the usage out of it that I wanted. (Mostly because they kept canceling spin classes, ugh.) Instead, in mid-August, I made a goal of walking 10,000 steps daily and I’ve been super successful at that.

2) Schedule a therapy appointment. GUESS WHAT I FINALLY DID THIS. I decided to work my way down the list of providers on my health insurance website and call two therapists a day until I found one that would call me back. Thankfully, it only took two calls to find a therapist and I’m going to my first appointment on Friday. I really, really hope she’s “the one.”

3) Buy an area rug. Complete! I bought this one from Target and it’s perfect!

4) Spend at least 30 minutes outside every weekend. Complete! I spent some time by my pool and also got outside for long walks, thanks to my goal of walking 10,000 steps every day.

5) Buy a book about the Enneagram. Complete! I bought The Road Back to You.

6) Cut my credit card balance in half. Complete! Actually, I did better than that and cut my credit card balance by 75%! I am pretty certain that I’ll be able to have it completely paid off sometime this month and that feels fantastic.

Here’s what I want to accomplish in September:

1) No more shopping. Hoo boy, I let myself go a little crazy with shopping in August. There were plenty of Amazon orders placed, an online order at Old Navy, and a few too many Target shopping trips. I want to settle down my shopping habit in September, and by that I mean, completely freeze any unnecessary spending for the rest of the month.

2) Walk 10,000 steps every day. This is a goal I have been consistently working towards since mid-August, and I think it’s a good one to put on my goals list for September. Since I typically have to do an hour-long walk every day to hit this goal, it’s a great way for me to get moving.

3) Eat three home-cooked meals a week. I’ve been spending a little too much money eating out lately (story of my goddamn life) as well as eating too many frozen meals. I’d like to challenge myself to eat three home-cooked meals a week in an effort to ease up on my spending and not-so-healthy meals. (And by three home-cooked meals, I really mean making one meal and eating leftovers for two days because I’m not crazy.)

4) Schedule a facial. I bought a Groupon for a facial last month and I’d like to cash it in this month. I’ve never had a facial before, but my skin is a constant source of annoyance for me. Hopefully, a facial can help!

5) Sell my sectional. It’s time to finally sell my sectional! I already have it listed on Craigslist but haven’t gotten any interested buyers as of yet. I may have to lower my asking price, womp womp.

6) Cultivate a better nighttime routine. Lately, I haven’t been great at my nighttime routine, something I used to be a boss at. I feel like I’m constantly running around and not settling into my night in a peaceful way. For me, a better nighttime routine involves shutting off all screens by 7:30, tidying up my apartment, taking a bubble bath, and doing a full skincare routine before getting into bed to read. Ideally, lights out by 9:00 every night.

What’s something you’d like to accomplish in September?

Six Small Goals for August

I’m happy to report that I was pretty successful with my July goals, especially when compared to previous months. I managed to complete three of the six goals I set for myself, and I’m feeling really good about that! August is going to be a busy month, so I’ve tried to select goals that won’t require too much from me. Hopefully, I can have my first 100% completion! We’ll see. For now, let’s take a look back on my July goals:

1) Design and order my mom’s wedding album. Done! It arrived in mid-July and it was perfect. I used Mixbook to create the album, and it allowed me to stretch my creative muscles a bit, which was fun. My mom and stepdad both love the album, and I’m so happy I finally did this for them.

2) Leave positive ratings and reviews for 10 of my favorite podcasts. Done! I’m glad I finally did this because I know how much podcasters rely on ratings and reviews. It was just a little thing I could do for these people who create such great work and give so much to me on a weekly basis.

3) Add two extra writing sessions at Starbucks. Done! I went to Panera instead of Starbucks, but I think I might make this an every-other-week thing because I really enjoyed it. Both times, I went on a Monday after work and spent two hours working on writing projects. It was much needed!

4) Schedule a therapy appointment. Ugh, no. Again. Can I outsource this to someone? Eeks.

5) Have a no-spend week. Nope. The only week that worked for not spending money was the last week of July and I completely forgot about this goal by then. Oops.

6) Visit a new-to-me nature preserve. Nope. My weekends in July were a little more frantic than usual as I had some freelance writing assignments to complete, as well as my girls’ weekend and my mom’s birthday. So, it just didn’t work out this time around!

Here’s what I want to accomplish in August:

1) Go to the gym every Wednesday morning. So, I’ve decided to not cancel my gym membership – at least, not right now. Instead, I’m going to try to ramp up my fitness again. I figure that I’m making my membership worthwhile if I go twice a week (equals out to just under $5 a session), but I’m going to start small since I haven’t been consistent with exercise (or, at least, going to the gym for a workout) for a few months now. So I’m challenging myself to implement a Wednesday morning gym routine. It means setting an early alarm (4:45AM, oof) and packing a gym bag since I’ll need to shower and get ready for work at the gym. It’s a hectic way to start my morning, but I kinda miss those early morning gym sessions.

2) Schedule a therapy appointment. One of these days, I’m actually going to mark this as complete.

3) Buy an area rug. A few months ago, I found the area rug I wanted at Target. It’s about $100, and that’s not chump change for me so I couldn’t get it the moment I saw it. But August is going to be a good month for my finances, so I’m going to allow myself to buy it finally.  Yay!

4) Spend at least 30 minutes outside every weekend. This shouldn’t be a hard goal to accomplish since I have a lot of plans in August that require being outside in the sunshine, so yay! But I made this goal to force myself to get outside since I have a tendency to stay inside, especially when I’m experiencing higher levels of anxiety or depression. I don’t need to make it a big production – even if I just go down to the pool with my book and put my feet in the water, that’s enough.

5) Buy a book about the Enneagram. It’s time to get cracking on what I think my type is, so I’m making myself the very simple goal to finally purchase a book about the Enneagram so I can read about all the types and figure out which one I am. I think I’m going to purchase The Road Back to You because it’s been highly lauded by many Enneagram fanatics, but if anyone has another rec, please let me know!

6) Cut my credit card balance in half. This is a pretty monstrous goal, but August is looking like a great month for my finances. I had two nice freelance assignments come in, and I get an “extra” paycheck this month, so I really think I can funnel a ton of money to my credit card. I’ll be happy to bring the balance under $1,000, but my bigger goal is to get it under $800.

Do you have any goals for August?
